Socoder -> Off Topic -> Worth repairing

I have recently purchased myself a new laptop, to replace my old one which was dying on me. There were two major problems with it; one, the screen's hinge was totally broken, I literally had to hold it with one hand to keep it from falling over completely and possibly snapping the laptop in two. The other problem is that the harddrive is failing; I've had several instances where I can't write files onto the drive, and can't delete files.

Now, the question is, is the laptop worth repairing? I'm sure the hinge can be repaired by a specialist, and the harddrive can be replaced. The other things are mostly minor (the CD drive door cover broke off, but its still useable), but I don't know if I should keep it for some purpose or not.

You could replace the Harddrive, and use it as a little server, I suppose..?

dunno !?

I don't really see how people can answer this, it's so subjective! Do you need the laptop, or would it just sit in the corner gathering dust if it was fixed? As Jay suggested, would you make use of a server?

What spec is it too? If it's an old low-end laptop then just buying a netbook might make a better purchase instead of the hard disk.

Finally you could swap the hard disk yourself prop the screen up permanently, turning it into a desktop. This would save you the cost of having to pay someone to repair it.

If you need a server I'd rather spend the money on renting a VPS since they're so cheap nowadays.

Depends entirely on what you want the server for. You wouldn't bother having an online printer server for home use.

Dead laptops make good door-stops and dead towers make good stools, so it looks like your old laptop does have a use after all !

To credit Steve, i used an old tower as a storage container for a while--

Does the CD drive still work? use a live CD on it, and use it for small piddly things. Buy a thumbdrive for storage, and there you go.

...umm, I should have probably mentioned I was thinking of selling it to someone. There's also someone on CraigsList that takes dying / broken laptops for like $20. I'm just wandering if I could get more money off a machine like this than what he could offer.
