For the newsletter..

To be honest, I'm not sure why I'm even asking. Everything I've asked for the newsletter so far has resulted in naff all, so.. carry on regardless.

My issue is with the current set of iOS games turning up.

Me, Dabs and Rockford have all done games, and that's off the top of my head.

I've stated that I'm not putting them into the Newsletter, because.. .. if I do, then any none-members would start swarming the site, in a desperate attempt to get their game automatically shoved into a newsletter.

That's not really the point of the newsletter. Might as well get the shitty auto-feed GameDev newsletter if that's all you want.

Instead, if anyone has an Android, and could be bothered to do a weekly "The App that I like this week" thing, then I could do the same thing on iOS, and we can make a thing of it.
Then maybe have Xbox Indie titles, and a homebrew, too!

I think that'd make a nice new feature.

Anyone?


For the record, this is coming up due to two things. 1. Dabz posted an iOS game, and I'm going "Awww, I already said I wouldn't.. fuck..fuck..fuck.." and 2. I'm about to write the hundredth!! might as well make a few tweaks for next week.

How are Android phones/tablets in general for apps?

There's lots of talk in other forums about the poor quality of many of the touchscreens - either unresponsive, inaccurate or the CPU is just plain crap.

Do these problems affect the majority of phones/tablets, or is it just cheap imported clones/knock-offs?

I want to get an Android device at some point (probably a tablet, as I have a phone and a laptop), and the prices are pretty reasonable - but are they reasonable because they are crap?

There's lots of competition and lots of pushing Android in every direction. Confusion reigns...

I've got an android phone -- HTC Droid Incredible. It works great, I haven't had any problems with it. I turned off some things and so I can get ~2 days of battery life off of it as long as I'm not going crazy. But keep in mind, I will be checking my e-mail regularly on it and running the occasional app between classes, so that's 2 days with a reasonable amount of use.

There are a lot of great apps on the phone, and I've just recently started trying to learn how to program for android. Developer tools seem pretty good so far, so we'll see how that goes. Most of the *big-name* apps are being made for both iPhone and Android, so you generally won't "miss out" on anything that's on one platform or another, although there have been some that my friends with iPhone get jealous of me for and visa versa.

What I like about android also is that apps don't have to be on the google app store, they can be anywhere. A lot of betas will be on websites, and they just have a QR code that you scan real quick with the phone and it starts downloading the app. Plus this means that other app stores can be created, which leads me to my next point;

Jay: Best app right now, is the Amazon App store -- free app every day that's usually for sale. I've probably gotten at least $15 worth of free apps from there, haven't paid for a single app yet.

Apple has pretty much screwed everyone at a $500 entry price point. They can go for volume but nobody else can. Lots of modern smartphones cost more than that.

Plus the fact that the cheaper iPod IS the same tech, or at least... Without the phone.
Compare that to my cheaper Android that has all the abilities of a brick..

lol, well, GLBasic only handles iOS at the minute, so, I was a bit stuck on that front!

Though, I've heard on the grapevine GLBasic will have Android support within 3 months, as well as I've figured out all of the shenanigans in monkey regarding Android, so, thats a go'er as well!

So in the interest of fair play, my next release will probably be both iOS and Android... As well a rebuilding my two GLBasic games for Android too!
