God damnit, what the fuck is that!?
The Metro theme's even infected their bloody logo, now!

Superman, Help us!! Someone has to stop the Metro!!

"If you look back to the origins of the logo you see that it really was meant to be a window,"

Yes, indeed. That's the original design.
But here's my issue.

The big BIG deal with Windows 8 for the "none-techy" folk, (the "we wanna sell to iPeople, too" folk) is actually the whole Metro thing. You know.. That thing without rails, smashing into everything, changing phones and xboxes and even windows into a bland, tasteless, uninteresting pile of fucking rectangular boxes..

You know what Metro DOESN'T have?

FUCKING WINDOWS..

And yet it's still gone and knackered your logo.
Well done...

Bring back Bill Gates!

Windows 8 will either be the second coming, or the biggest, steaming pile that the mass-market has seen since Vista.

I know which my money is on - I'm sticking with Windows7 for the foreseeable.

I don't really care about the logo. But the thing I *do* care about is whether or not Windows 8 will be a cloud OS. If it will be, I'm buying a fucking mac and installing Linux on this PC.
I won't risk having Microsoft telling me what I can and cannot install on my own damn PC (which won't actually be on my PC but on Microsoft's servers...), not to mention being dependent on a constant internet connection to boot!

Edit: After doing some research, it seems like Windows 8 might not be *fully* cloud-based, but that it will have more cloud features. That's enough for me to consider dropping support of it for Project Dollhouse, even if it means I have to code in Mono.
I'm sick of all this cloud bullshit, and I'm not going to be a part of supporting it (that's coming from someone who loves MMOs)!

Over at [H]ardOCP, someone mentioned the "mythical Microsoft Stores" logo should've been used.

Can't argue with that!

I don't think Win8 will be completely awful, as I've heard Metro isn't required - but what does it offer other than Metro?

On topic, the logo is offal.

I don't get all the hate around the new logo. None of the previous Windows logos were that great; most look worse. I also won't be buying Windows 8 based on it's logo.

Sure it's not amazing, but at least it fits with the new Metro design (which is important).

Like most versions of Windows, there are no killer features. It is lots and lots of small stuff.

  • lower requirements then Windows 7
  • new graphics driver model is faster
  • new UIs for lots of Windows components, like copying or the task manager
  • new Explorer; tonnes of new controls built in, and now has the Ribbon. I always have the ribbon hidden, which gives me more screen space for files then on Win7
  • if Windows updates is set to automatic, it is much less intrusive. It just mentions them next to the login screen, and then does it's own thing
  • Metro includes a platform for building applications (gives developers more options, such as using HTML/JS for applications)
  • Windows Store for getting Metro and non-Metro applications
  • new boot manager, which does things like use your display settings (useful for dual-monitor setups)
  • in-built spell checker
  • clicking on the left edge of the screen does alt+tab-like behaviour. If it gets changed to a true alt+tab, it will be awesome!
  • a version of IE which doesn't suck!

Personally I quite like Metro, but when your on the desktop, you pretty much only use Metro as a start-menu replacement. I don't often use the Start Menu, so most of the time I don't see it.

However it's also a lot nicer, simply because you have big tiles to click on, instead of tiny start menu icons. It means I can click start and then open an application in less time. Less time is good!

Some of the other Metro-like bits like the new networks bar, and the power warnings, are both prettier and nicer to use. Again this is partly because they are just bigger, rather then being stuffed into one corner.

You got that right, it's comparable to many kinds of waste animal guts.

To mirror what I posted somewhere else...
Microsoft seem to have flushes 25 years of progress down the drain...

Not only is the interface just like windows 1, the logo is too.
