SoCoder2 Site Test!

Hello!

SoCoder2

I'm getting fairly close to a 'usable' version of SoCoder2, now, but I'm fairly sure I've forgotten things.

Things that definitely don't work, yet.

Profiles
Smilies option. They're currently locked to 'Hair'.
Time option. The time is updated based on your current system clock, but I'm not 100% sure on whether that's enough, or whether I should add it back into the profile.

BBCode
Twitter, Hoverpops and Tabs don't currently work. Mostly due to lack of accompanying javascript.

MudChat
Although still functional, the MudChat isn't linked in the site, anywhere.
I'm not sure if it's necessary... Nobody uses it! :\

Admin
Deleting of topics, Locking of topics. .. Those kinds of things I still have to nip to the old site to do!

Search Pagination
General laziness.. I got sick of looking at the search's code!!

Additional Admin
Merging topics, splitting topics, and other such *power* features!!

Deleting of Notes
I intend to add this feature!! No, really, I do!!!

Background stuff
Limiting 'Forgot my password' attempts, but not so much that it gets stuck like the old one did.
Finishing off moving the Newsletter from the separate database into the main one.

More Themes
Because more choice = better!!!

-=-=-

That might seem like a fairly large list, but after a month and a half, I can tell you that that's a significantly smaller list than it was at the start!!

So, with the above 'issues' in mind, feel free to start using s2.php for general usage, and also for testing.
Go crazy with your testing.
Let me know of any issues you might (/probably will!) find.

Thanks, all!

Note : Once I'm happy it's all working, the old script will be deleted, and the new script renamed to replace it. And it'll definitely be happening soon, so you might as well get used to the new site, now!!

Is it wrong to say I prefer the old site?

Why do you prefer the old site? Be more descriptive so I can tweak.

I don't know... feels a bit 'boxy'? maybe just its different. I might get used to it in a couple days. The poll looks out of place tho.

I'm on my phone atm and just discovered the 'dock sidebar' thing. Thought all that was just missing at first.

The front page is admittedly a bit of a mess.
Trying to find a way to fit everything in, but that would also fit into mobile view, and "work" with any available theme.
Pain in the arse!!

Click into the paintbrush options, set the width to narrow and undock the sidebars, and you've got a nice looking, single column, mobile view.

I've had my first look now and TBH, I miss the latest posts box on the right. The Shoutbox is just too big.

I use the latest posts far more than the Shoutbox, so to lose it off the front page means quite a lot to me. I don't know how others feel about that though.

Other than that, it's smooth and fast

Does it make a difference if I say it's all in there, just all mixed into one single box?
.. maybe I should add an option to split it?

Definitely not liking it. It just looks not great. Not trying to hurt your feelings Jay.

Feedback is key!

Personally, not to be to cynical, but this style really suited me:

SoCoder's never looked great. I can live with that.
People who use the site don't use it because it's beautiful. If they did, they're not using it right

This isn't about looks, it's about functionality.

Oh, and as for your quote button comment. SoCoder's never had a quote button.
Pisses me off when you end up with a thread of quote after quote after multiquote after multiquote, with each person just adding "Yeah" to the post that's RIGHT THE FUCK ABOVE THEM!!!!
We can all read the thread. We don't need the multiquoting!!!!
RAWR!
If people desperately need to quote, they can do it manually, so it's frustrating enough not to be overused.

OK, since it seems to be a common complaint, I've reset the default so that the sidebars are on.
If you're on a mobile, you're going to have to switch those off, yourself!!
Unless anyone knows a surefire trick for knowing when a device is mobile, but not a tablet...!?

I'm on mobile (galaxy J5 2016) and it's fine with the sidebars on.

Is it just me, or are the first words in the sidebar links not clickable?

Check out my excellent homepage!

Yeah, I've noticed that, too. Can't seem to shift it, either. I've been trying to sort it for the past week or so, but it's some bloody CSS issue.

It happens when you set a specific width in the theme settings (ie, not "Full Width), which is wider than the available space, and also have the sidebar docked.
The middle div seems to overlap the right hand div, making it unclickable.
Frustratingly, this happens no matter what the z-order of the divs, and is irrelevant of the actual display of the divs.
I might make a little test version and see if anyone can solve it.

|update| I think I've fixed it..!? |update|

Like the S2 site with the docked sidebars and the BlitzCoder Theme.

K... maybe I'm going daft here...

If I don't have either/both sidebars docked, how exactly do I get them to appear? I seem there's an option to have them instant or slide-in, but none of that seems to be happening.

On the bigger-chunkier-icon-bar thing at the top, there's now a little cog icon on the left, and a standard-looking "4 bars" icon on the right.
Clicking those brings in the sidebars.

To close them up again, you need to re-click the icons.
I need to see about making a way to make them slide out, when you click outside them.. Going to need extra hidden-divs for that!

Yeah that'd be better... thought personally I think I'd leave both sidebars perma-docked anyway.

Just doing a spot of testing, trying to post in locked threads. Seems to not work. It used to work on bb.com years back so thought I'd give it a go.

I've found myself leaving the left-bar undocked. I barely ever interact with it, since it's pretty much just options, or navigating the various sections of the site.
For the most part the right hand sidebar is enough.
Having the "Quick Post" link (the New Page icon in the middle of the big chunky icon bar) always available without needing the sidebar, also helps quite a lot.

Glitch!

On Socoder2 after clicking a link to a thread in the right sidebar, i have to hit my phone's back button twice to get back to the previous page. Nothing happens on the first hit.

Tested on old socoder and it works fine.

That'll be due to all the JavaScript URL replacement stuff.
I'll have to dig through it to make it perfect, but in general it's there to keep the URLs clean-looking in your address bar.
May be easier to give you a switch for it.

I'm gonna be honest, I actually prefer the look at the current site than SoCoder2... But I will go along with what ever Jay throws at us, coz that's the true SoCoder's way.

You get used to it.
When I first made the jump about a month ago, it was full of odd little quirks and things, but now whenever I have to go back to, say.. lock a topic!! (haven't added that, yet) I'm shocked at how big a difference there is between the old and the new.

I'm much more comfortable in the new site, now.
It's grown on me, and it all feels a bit more ... ... Strong and Stable!!
