Looks like I'll be getting a Oculus Quest a great review by the Tested guys: YouTube

Definitely looks good.

Amazon currently have it priced at £499 for the 128Gb model, and as cheap as that is, I'm not going to be joining in.
£59 for the Switch Labo VR was pretty much wasted, albeit for occasional 10 minute sessions. There's no WAY I'm going to be spending £499 on something that I can only play with for mere minutes at a time.

*cough*

So, um.. yeah, about that..

I just spent £299 on something I can only play for mere minutes at a time.

The Reasoning

Oh my god, I've put on so much weight, lately.
I'm unfit.
I've no stamina.
I need help...

The treadmill is now in the shed, unused. Treadmill, even at a slow pace, is ... paced.. It's marching back and forth with repetitive movement. It causes wave upon wave to build up in my head and I just can't hack it.

I recently attempted various forms of Motion Control boxing, from Wii Sports, to Switch's Arms.
Everything I tried required me focusing intently on a screen, whilst moving around, and the motion sickness kicked in in next to no time.

The only thing I have left is the little pedal bike, and as good as that is, it's not exactly extraneous activity. Plus, trying to hold onto an iPad, for something to look at whilst I'm going, is a bit of a pain in the arse.

But the weight's getting worse.. The fitness is plummeting... I HAVE to do something..

Every day for the past month or so, I've been looking at VR and thinking "Not everything is fast paced chaos..."
If I can find some nice slower apps, things that don't require too much head movement (which is somewhat against the nature of the device) but that would result in my flailing my arms and legs around, then.. Maybe .. Just maybe, VR might actually help me..?

.. Right!?!?

But that price tag. Hmmm

The Push

Mum's been playing TONS of Tetris, lately.
As much fun as she's having playing Super Monkey Ball - Billiards, she's also REALLY loving Tetris.
I bought her Tetris Effect, and she enjoys that, too, but..

I wonder what that'd be like in VR?...

But with a giant cable trailing across the room, and the obvious dangers with that, I decided it's probably not a good idea.

Until I saw someone on Twitter mention that the game is also on the Quest.
And then I went..

... Hmmmm...?
Should I!!??!

The Plunge

I ordered one on Wednesday, and it finally arrived today at about half bloomin' four. Not really a decent time for play testing, since Tipping Point, The Chase and House of Games were on.
But I gave it a quick go during the Chase. Mum watched the quiz, whilst I played around in the "First Steps" game. Flinging rockets and batting balls, and stuff like that.

The Experience

Oh, MAN, it's SO far ahead of everything I've tried out before.. Those cardboard headset doohickeys are garbage by comparison.
The tracking's spot on and there doesn't appear to be any specific motion sickness, yet.

After about half an hour, I was managing ok. The most difficult thing is still looking up. Obviously I still have a giant hole in my brain that fills with fluid when I look up, and that REALLY triggers bad shit. As much as things might be flying all around me in a game... I CANNOT look up.

One of the "First Steps" playthings is a little table-tennis bat and ball. I picked up the bat.. Picked up the ball.. Threw the ball up in the air.. Glanced up to hit the ball with the bat, and...

*blink*

.. Yeah.. it took me a couple of minutes to recover from that. Head spinning wildly.. At least I didn't black out.. :/

So, definitely need to avoid anything that happens upwards!!

Other than that one issue, I coped alright. I stopped playing about half an hour or so after starting, and though it's been about an hour since, I'm still feeling a little bit "3D-drunk". Inside the VR, the motion sickness was minimal, but once out again, things just feel a margin off. Not sure why that is. It's kinda the opposite of what I was expecting.

I'm definitely feeling queasy.. But, not too much. It's manageable.
I think I'd probably stick to half hour sessions, and as long as I only go for slower paced experiences, I reckon I'll manage ok.

*two thumbs up*

It's on charge, now. These things aren't exactly fully charged, out of the box.

Cost

Oculus Quest 2 : 128Gb
Bought from Amazon.co.uk, for £299.

I've been reading up a ton of VR stuff over the past day or so, and have since learned that Facebook's "Connect" event is happening at the end of the month, where they'll no doubt be unveiling the Quest 3... Fuxake..

You now know proper VR 😜

Go easy on it though, even without a hole in me head and with years of VR I still get dizzy!

Hmm, I was going to recommend you "I Expect You To Die" series, as they are escape rooms but sitting down, but you do have to look up.

I've got the VR Tetris game, but it is just 2D Tetris in VR...

Funny that, I ended up shelling out £280 the other day for a PS4 PRO...witth 2 years of warranty after the last one died on me unceremoneously after just 3 months of usage.

As I was told I had a 1 month warranty from the GAME employee I bought the last one from, I did the right thing and sent it off to a computer shop to be repaired. Turns out it'sa faulty board on it and they've had to tear off the "do not tear sticker". So, I went into GAME recently and asked them where I stood, it's 2 months over their 1 month warranty and...the Clerk informed me I had 12 months and that, as long as I hadn't tore the sticker on the back it'd be a straight up replacement, otherwise they wouldn't replace it.

So, that's me out £200. not buying a single thing from GAME again now, got a boxed pro from CEX instead.

I have the racing seat. Just need to get the PSVR and wheel 'n' pedals set next.

Session 2

1. Audio Shield : Seems a bit. Um.. wide.
Lots of looking side to side.
Might have to see if there are options to reduce that.

2. Tetris Effect
Lovely!!
Yeah, it's just 2D Tetris, but I'm ok with that!
I will say, however, that the game feels oddly low-res. Not sure why.
Maybe it's because the tiny particles show up the screen's pixels, or something?

3. YouTube 360
Took a bike ride for about 5 mins, before the rider's cam went wonky, and I started peddling sideways.
Almost lost my supper.
Boooooooooo!!!

Ginger is meant to help with the VR dizzyness and travel sickness pills, but not sure if that'll help you Jay

Take it slow and only play is small bursts to get your VR legs.

Now if you could try Skyrim VR, not super fast motion, but looking up at the dragons etc (more so when fully modded is awesome).

Again TAKE IT SLOW!

"but looking up at the dragons etc "

I think Jayenkai will need to be the dragon looking down instead

Proper VR is awesome. I played so much time in Elite Dangerous in VR, it is like entering a different world. I've never tried Skyrim though, maybe I need to do that.

Typical motion sickness remedies are irrelevant for me. I think a lot of them assume an inner-ear problem, so the medicines and such tend to work on either numbing the ear, or something of the sort. I'm not 100% sure how they work, but what I do know is the the fluid inside your brain tends to move at slightly different rates depending on how cold your head is.

A nice warm sunny morning can mean my brain fluid feels less viscous, and flows around like crazy, leading to amplified motion when tilting your head.
Conversely, if it's a cold day, the fluid feels thicker, and although tilting is easier, turning becomes harder because the slowness of the goo makes things .. it's kind of like a lag, inside your own head.

Though these do indeed sound like ear-balance issues, I've had thorough testing in my ears. My ears are fine.
They've put it down to the hole, and my ability to feel the fluid rolling around in there!!
Annoying as hell.

But thankfully, the VR doesn't seem to make things any worse. Just the same issues I have IRL. Glancing side to side leaves me dizzy. Quickly looking up is a horror show.
No better. No worse.

Just be-careful of your inner ear balance too in VR, Jay

Along with the Oculus Store Quest games, you can use Steam with Virtual Desktop (awesome!) and the PCVR Oculus Store. SideQuest and recently with the App App, there are more and more games available:

I've been meaning to get back in E, might have to try it in VR

Andy if you do try Skyrim, definitely get the VR utils and updated graphics mods.

Although "Labs" games are in the oculus store, you have to know what to search for.
This site has a nice user-submitted list of games.

AGameAWeek Tests

ShoeboxOfGames.com : Works! Play solitaire, Yahtzee and more in plain 2D!
Browsercade.com : Runs but is unplayable. Apparently I need to work out the WebXR stuff to once again add gamepad support. Grr...
GotoJSE.com : same as Browsercade

Love the moves!

If you're into horror, and I mean proper scream like a little girl, there are some great scare games when you get yourself into the game.

Nope!!!!!!!

I did, however, just have a nice (four whole songs!) session with BeatSabre.
Nice game. Shame about the music!

Would love to be able to enjoy AudioShield, but with such a wide play area, it really messes with my head!

Yep! We had the thing casting to the iPad earlier, so we could kinda watch what the other was doing in VR. .. (Mostly so I could help guide Mum to figure out the controllers.. Mum can't get the hang of the two different triggers!!)

Additionally, I hit the record button when mum was doing her dancing, and ...
*shrugs*
I have no idea what the app did with that footage, 'cos it sure as hell isn't anywhere on the Oculus, on the App, or in the iPad Gallery.

Gone!!!

Haven't looked into online features.
Mostly I do enjoy the "getting together with a group of online friends" aspect, but the "I need to leave now, I'm going to throw up." part isn't as great, and the "you cannot leave this level yet, or you'll be punished" aspect is quite daunting.

But, yeah, how do I go about doing that?

Also : @Steve...
You'll be fine.
If I can cope with all my balance issues, you'll be fine.

Granted, I've been sat down the whole time, but .. yeah, you'll be fine!

Had a lovely ride through Seattle, tonight.

Youtube link.

With the foot-pedal bike thing under my feet, I pedalled for just over 1100 rotations. (Cheap pedal bike doesn't give me better stats than that!)

I managed about 14 minutes, up until the bit where he reaches the Space Needle.
Lovely!!!
Had to stop, there, though. Whether it's the "not proper 3D", or the wiggly camera shakes, or the occasional glitches where the camera doesn't quite orientation itself after a turn...
Between those, it got a little nauseous.

But it was manageable.

With the bike rides and the beat sabre, I'm hoping my weight drops to something more normal!!
