I was just watching QI on tv, and they said that a chicken once survived absolutely ages after having its head cut off, I thought they were lying, but I looked it up.

Apparently Mike the headless chicken survived 18 months...

Weird.

well, hey Spinal my Granma and Granpa used to live on a farm. When it was time for fried or baked chicken, Granpa would catch a chicken on the farm and whip and spring its neck off. The body would still be alive and moving some.
Granma would clean the chicken and fry it.

I used to do it with catfish and trout.
Clean the fish and cook it. Man!, those little suckers put up such a fight while reeling them in.
ahhhhh, fishin at Lake Washington.

I always new that chickens still had a lot of nerve activity after decapitation, but I just never realized that decapitation could fail to kill.

haha

I'll eat a soybean burger tomorrow.
I had a few now and then. And they taste like real hamburgers too.
Or perhaps a Subway sandwich.

I don't get that... If you (vegetarians in general) don't want to EAT meat, why would you/they want to TASTE it? If I had a problem with eating meat, I surely wouldn't ever want the taste of it in my mouth, no matter if is made from beans or mushrooms or anything, it would make me feel really guilty for liking the taste of it etc.

you misunderstood me.

I'm a vegetarain at times. By that I mean that I eat my fruits and vegetables. Love apples and grapes. But I also eat meat. I have tried soybean burgers before. And the ones that I ate smelled and tasted like real hamburgers. Just a novelty and marketing perhaps...to sell more of these kind of burgers. Really scrumpous diddly umptous.

But don't worry, I'll have a Subway club sandwich tommorrow and for dinner too.

Spinal, it's not that vegetarians don't like meat, it's that they don't agree in killing animals for food. It's not the same thing. Meat tastes nice, that's why I'm not a vegetarian. Many vegetarians (like my brother) would also agree it's very nice.

So vegetarians disagree with killing animals for food, but are happy to eat things that taste like those animals they don't want to kill? That makes absolutely no sense what so ever.

So would a vegetarian be happy to eat an animal that died in an accident, or of old age? If just the killing part is unliked, surely this would be the case.

That is not what I said.

They like the taste but don't agree with killing. Eating an animal that has died naturally is completely different. I wouldn't eat roadkill or any of my pets if they died, would you? A meat substitute made from plants is then a good alternative.

Back on topic... I have been hearing about how chickens still ran around for a while after the head was removed. I have never actually seen it for myself. Not that I would want to see it done though. I dont think that I would want to eat it, if I actually witnessed it being slaughtered.

its good and cool that you are discussing and even debating about this......

but whoa nellie! stop horsie stop horse.

I was just joking in reference to Afro. His response.
Yet, I do eat meat myself but I also try to eat my minimum daily and Government allowable nutritional standards of the four food groups.

and JL, you said it best.

but to be honest, my family did go to a place out in the midwest...Kansas. We stopped and had soybean burgers.
They were meat seasoned and aromitized to taste like real hamburgers. A lot of the populace, at the time, were living and working on dairy and cattle farms.
So, one way to sell more of these kinds of burgers is to make em taste and smell like the real thing. Marketing, hype and advertising. Happens all the time.

I hope you all understand a little bit better.

|edit| Sometime days I won't eat meat and be fine having peanut butter and strawberry sandwiches. Or even a vegetarian pizza too. |edit|

I agree, nothing wrong with Banana+Peanut Butter.

Banana + Peanut Butter + Strawberry Jam + Brown Bread = Breakfast Sandwich
A classic.. From Amiga Power

I have to disagree, I do not like ripe bananas (greenish & hard are fine) and hate anything nut related, I can barely stand some chocolate spreads cos they taste nutty. So I guess it's just jam and brown bread for me.

well, silly spinal

ya peel off the green skin of a banana before you eat it.

yeah, Jay.
Peanut butter and strawberry jam sandwiches and with a banana on the side. Or even spam sandwiches, some chips, and a banana on the side.
Oh man, mom makes em best! Lettuce, tomatoes, onions, and mayo, and spam lite. Some lightly shaken salt and pepper too on the sandwiches. Some potato chips, a banana and a few cookies. ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
And while I read the Elk Grove newspaper or even Time magazine. I'm really having a luxury lunch.
