A new breed..

I'm drawing graphics!

Today I tried working on the JNKPlat DS Level Editor, but my silly pc crashed about 5 times whilst trying to compile.
Stupid thing.

So I figured I'd get started on my Alien Breed game.

Usually I code, code, code then do some gfx afterwards. Since I can't compile properly, I'm doing things the other way around this time.
Paintshop Pro was loaded up, and I set off replicating the original look, whilst ensuring I drew everything myself so they won't kick my ass for copying them, afterwards.

I drew the basic floors, walls and doors, before giving up for the day.
Next I'll have to draw collectables, like keys, medikits, maybe a choice of weapons.. And then it'll be time for the sprites.
I'm not looking forward to doing the sprites

Control wise, I'm in two minds.

Method 1
Gameplay on the topscreen, Menu system on the bottom.
Tap to use collectables.
Move with DPad, Shoot with A/B/X/Y (directional)

Method 2
Gameplay on Bottomscreen, Menu on top.
Use L-Trigger to activate menu system.
Move with DPad, Shoot by tapping in the direction you want to shoot.

Not sure..
I'll give each a go, and maybe add the option to choose.

Mock shot using gfx drawn so far.

Screen's flipped, and player added.
(but again, all mocked, since I can't code anything without the pc crashing!!)

*Sorry, image lost!*

Looks a bit like Samus.. But at least it looks ok, and not the same crappy player that I usually end up drawing!

I've added lighting effects to the player and weapon when the weapon fires, so that should be a neat looking effect, but I'm not sure how to light the arena.
I'm considering drawing a second layer of background, with a lighter pallete, and then erasing everything but a small radius around the weaponfire. Not sure if that'll work or not.

Next up, drawing aliens! Eeek!!

I decided to create a sort of evolving alien style, starting with little spider bugs and gradually becoming Alien/Alien Breed style aliens.

*This image lost, too*

My art style has been improving as I go! I'll probably redo the 3rd and 4th alien bugs.

The one on the right looks like quite a good imitation

I hope this gets finished, Alien breed 92 was one of my favorite games once.
