I'm getting sick of the new Windows Media Player with Windows 7, it's just crap. So I'm thinking of looking around for alternatives.

What do you use for playing music, and why?

Well, If I shall be totally honest...
I use Win7's WMP too...

And I'm seeking alternatives too... XD

Used to use VLC, but it doesn't have all the functionality of WMP.

iTunes for music.

VLC for video - VLC is awesome if you want a simple, light-weight player.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again..
Coolplayer with BarBar skin.

Or if you prefer streamed net-radio, use Winamp.

I'm with Blanko. iTunes for Music, VLC for video.

Honestly, I've never been disappointed with either.

I use Winamp. There's a bunch of stuff it does which I never use, but its playlist management is really the best I've come across.

I've tried VLC, thought it was too slow and not as good as Media Player Classic.

Is WinAmp still really crap? I remember it was awesome years ago, but it went down hill.

A combination of Spotify and YouTube. Spotify is able to serve 95% of my musical needs though, so there really isn't much need for YouTube.
For video and esoteric music formats I use VLC. It constantly surprises me in what it's capable of playing!

If you want the web-based equivalent of Spotify (except you don't need an invite!), you should try Grooveshark. Courtesy of HoboBen!

Edit: And by 95% of my musical needs, I'm talking everything from Christina Aguilera through The Blues Brothers to John Coltrane!

FOOBAR2000 TIMES A MILLION!

I can't recommend this highly enough. I even wrote a blog post about it. I think I can summarise my entire argument in it's favour as: Very lightweight, heaps of features, and is more stable than anything else I've encountered.

I downloaded WinAmp on my PC to try to stream a radio when the station got taken off iTunes, and I really regret it. It's total crap, and I'm too lazy to uninstall.

I use Media Monkey for music and have no complaints; mind you, I have never really tried all the others.

VLC for video definitely; plays everything with no questions asked!

Foobar2000.

I don't care about the insane customisation - it's just *amazingly* fast.

Here's an old one you guys and girls probably forgot:
WInDVD

I still have version 4, which was free with the item I purchased, and it still works for current media formats.

For some reason when I use VLC, the software occasionally has trouble playing some formats for some reason.

That's probably more of a codec issue then a VLC one.

I've decided to switch to using Windows Media Player as a full music library. On the plus side I only need one window instead of two (player + explorer). It also encourages me to listen to whole albums and playlists rather then one track at a time. I'm more productive this way and it gets to stay minimized for longer.

On the down side, I hate all-in-one media libraries.

Hey.

What about playing music from the internet without the ads?

Does anything do that?

If you want to pay for it. Companies have to churn money somehow.

Again, use Winamp.
Alt+L to bring up the Library, head into the Shoutcast streams, and try to find a good one!

|edit| KickRadio's quite good for adverts. They don't do Adverts, per-say, and instead accept donations, giving companies a mention whenever they ask for more donations. Kinda like some sort of Super-Ad, in that, because it's the only one, they're getting a bigger ad. |edit|

Foobar2000 for music, VLC for video.

fb2k is awesome, a lightweight core, very customisable with add ons for everything (including ipods)

I got that Winamp and though it is good, the player does not play any MP4 files.
I have to use quickimne for that which is uncomfortable.

and I just switched to WinAmp. What finally did it is that WMP always changes to the sync mode when I insert my memory stick, even though sync is turned off (and so it's not actually doing any sync'ing).

Very annoying because I have to close WMP and stop my music before I can remove my stick.

Maybe I'll try what cucco uses for video. VLC might have the codecs for playing MP4 files.

Installing CCP (Community Codec Pack) should give you the codecs you need for mp4 and more! It will also install Media Player Classic Homecinema. I'd highly recommend it over VLC for video.
