So...they record brain activity as a video is watched.
They reference the content of the video the the type of brain activity for each second.
They take those content references and build a facsimile video from the recorded brain activity.

...they are not reading anyone's mind. The brain activity is superfluous. They could do the exact same thing without monitoring anyone's brain.

It's a step towards understanding what it is that the brain's doing, and even if it is just small clips, and "live" memories, it's still a massive leap forward.

Everything requires a first step, and this is a decent one.
