Hey jay, when will we get our chat back. Obviously the oscar site isnt up yet but could we get the chat on phoenix's server or move everything to stealths?

Once I stop the CPULoad from doing THAT...

Could you not ask Stealth for his chat code, and use that? It always appeared to work fine on his site and is far superior to Gabbly.

I don't think it's going to be too hard to reduce the CPULoad on the chat. I mean, it's really not TOO bad, considering, but I'm sure I can reduce it a litle more.
Over the next few days I'll be running a few tests with it, and I'm setting up a few more Debug-esque output files from the main site scripts to give myself a more accurate graph than the one above.

With any luck, the MudChat should be up and running by next week.

Stealth's chat code could be used, but it would only be a basic chatroom. The second I start to add Mud'y things in, we'd be right back to using that same CPU time..

But, just to clarify, that "Huge" leap is actually only about 2.5 "CPU" points (averaged per minute, not too sure what the value represents!) above the normal usage.
The norm is about 0.9, and you can see the current CPULoad value on the bottom right of the site. Keep in mind that whenever the server is doing stuff, like backups and things, that the CPULoad value will leap up! It's hit 10.3 at one point!

Jay,

is there a way to resolve this issue. well..I'm not much in knowing about servers and the CPU loads being accessed and utilized.
But could there be a way...like for example...to shut down the chat at certain intervals of time to do these maintenances and backups.
True, it will be an inconvience but shut the chat down at times and on certain days to perform cleaning, maintennace, backups and all that. Yet, post a notice to indicate if and when people go into the chatroom and to let them know.

Also, when will these maintenannces be performed and what kind of basis?
Like for example, at work, the Decco washers...certain ones will go down for certain hours and on certain days for
Daily Cleans--detailed maintennance, cleaning and checking of the particular washer. System checks on both the hardware and software of the specific washer. Takes at least 5 to 6 hours.
Weekly Cleans-some maintennance and cleaning of the specific washer. System and ESC software checks and tests.
Takes a few hours.
Monthly Cleans-check of the machine itself and a basic clean. At least an hour or so.

cheers,

When the PHP script is executed it required the CPU to process it. Usually its not an issue because a PHP page can be processed and output rather quickly. But when you request many PHP pages a second it really starts to slow down the system. I assume phoenix has a shared hosting plan, and the webhosts place a limit on how much power you can use to keep users from abusing it. For instance, you can open notepad once on your computer and your computer is rather quick at it. But if you keep clicking on notepad (opening up multiple copy's several times per second) your computer will become rather slow. I assume Jay is going to optimize the code, making the PHP page execute faster.

Gabbly is really messed up, when I'm logged in I don't show up in the list of people in the chatroom, meaning that whenever I post something nobody can see it.

OK, Gabbly's totally messed up, now! Well done to the Gabbly guys for once again buggering that up!

The mudchat... I think I might have a solution, but I'm going to have to play about with it, first. It'll mean rewriting the Javascript from scratch, and probably rewriting the actual server-side mudchat stuff, too. Which will more than likely mean we lose everything that's been done so far.
But if it works as intended, then that won't be too much of a loss.

I'll try to get something done, ASAP, so we no longer have to deal with Gabbly.

Update soon.

OK, the Mudchat (really basic edition) should now be vaguely usable.
\me works, chat works, nothing else!
I need to recode most of the thing, but it shouldn't be too hard now that the basics are in.

If you tried getting there in the past few minutes, reload it, as I messed up the Javascript!

Should be ok, now.. (I think!)
Let me know if there's any issues.

FYI: The chat scrolling wasn't altered, so quite why it no longer works is truely baffling.
Be thankful that the chat is operating at all..

yeah,

sometimes the scrolling wasn't working. But even more...

the chat-send box would only accept one to two words.
People thought the mousey was on crack. I wasn't but the chat sure was.

but hey, from the song One Fill from NYA JADE:

yeah, we're a quick fix nation

one pill
just to kill the pain
and theres one pill
to make you feel sane
and theres one pill
for a cheap thrill
and its all down hill.

Jay: in the short term, could you increase the height of the mud chat? Such as two or three times the height, so it will take longer for us to run out of space. We could then just scroll down the page.

Currently I am re-entering the Mud Chat when I run out of space.
