I've never found the need to jot things down. My life has been oddly scribble-less.
You'll notice that in amongst my masses of inexplicably old garbage that I occasionally post, there's never really been all that much in the way of notepads or a4 sheets.
I just don't use 'em. Ideas pop into my head all the time, but I guess I'm lucky, in that they tend to stay put.

I'm shit at remembering anything else, ever, (like homeworks.. Teachers used to hate me for that!) but codey stuff stays put.

I'm blaming our Mr Ancell... I was having a browse through that Amstrad abandonware site, downloaded a game (The Apprentice), and, it's a bit pants, but, I really enjoyed it because when I was a kid, a mate give me it, minus destructions, and, used to play it without really a clue what the hell to do (Apart from take valuables to the spazzy wizards)

Anyway, there I was, sitting there... And the itch began, no, not the clap... The game dev itch and before I knew it, an idea has popped into my head... Its a sorta combination of two games I've seen, probably not the most original (What is), but, I never played this flavour of game before, so... My mind ended up being really keen and, been thinking of nowt else since!

Only sorta beef is, if I was going to code it... What shall I use, GLBasic or Monkey... I have heaps of code in BlitzMax that will ease the dev time, but, not going there for now, on top of the fact... I've got shedfuls on at the minute too... Mmmmm.... Decisions, decisions!

No, not really and in all honesty, I really havent the time to polish a game up to the standards required on a portal, I like Jays John Smiths 8 bit approach to game graphics, and, since I've been Amstrading it in the last couple of days, I'll be picking a small palette of colours, and just using them, and see what happens!!!

Seriously though, I have both GLBasic and Monkey, though, GLBasic has more targets in terms of what I'll be interested in... So, I'm a leaning towards that me auld bean!

You know what's really helped improve my sprites, lately?
Having an App for That!

I recently bought the iPad app "Sprite Something", and.. Well.. At first I had my usual "eeuw, new art package!" issues, like I kept clicking the wrong buttons, and I was annoyed by the lack of gradient fill, and other things like that.

But as I continued to use it, I learned its tricks, and very very quickly got used to doodling little sprites using only the small number of tools provided.
Being able to doodle directly onto the screen is a huge advantage, and the fact that it's still nice and grid based is a bonus.
Zooming in is a simple multi-touch pinch, and it even keeps a list of the last 10 colours you used, for quick switching, so if you're sticking to a limited palette, you can swiftly swap between then.

It's a great little tool, and I've grown to love it.
All the sprites in Karl's Tiny Adventure were made with Sprite Something, even the logo! All my recent Twitter avatars have also been done with it, as have a number of other silly bits and pieces I've been doodling.

Cracking app, even if it did take me a few weeks to get to grips with it.

I agree, having a proper tool helps tremendously! I use Adobe Photoshop CS3, and though I haven't used it for gamey stuff for ages, I use it to create artwork.
You can get cheap copies of Photoshop on eBay (same thing goes for Paintshop Pro, I would imagine), but it's difficult to tell if they're pirated or not, so buy at your own risk!

@Dabz, fair enough - I've always "tried" to use the right tool for the right job, so if GLBasic is the right tool for you go for it!
