10 year old tech, but, what a bargain!

Grabbed an ex-business Lenovo Lappy, 2nd gen i5 with 4gb of ram, working 15.8 inch monitor and battery, a cosmetic scratch or two but nowt else from ebay for £28 the other day including postage, added an SSD and power cable for another 30 quid.

Bunged linux mint on it and have been testing it out for it's main use case, which is, effectively as a web browser to handle youtube, facebook, etc. And, well, it performs really well for the price point of £60, I've only really dabbled with Slax before checking out Linux mint and, yeah, it's rather nice and friendly in comparison.

Why am I putting these bits together? Mum was in need of a laptop and she explained that all it was being used for was browsing on the internet but she wanted a lappy over another ipad and after going shopping with my brother, it was all a bit pricey, around the £500 - £600 mark.

Showed Mum a screen shot of the desktop last night and she loves the fact that I've set it up to have dedicated facebook and youtube buttons on the taskbar, hopefully it'll all go well on Sunday when I deliver it!

I bought a 2 in 1 Lenovo ideapad a while back. Only thing wrong with it is the very low quality speakers. My older Lenovo gaming laptop was the best gaming laptop I ever had. But the thing eats electricity.

The ideapad lasts up to 10 hours on battery.

It has passed the teenager test!

Triston bunged a bunch of games on there including a marble roller, tux kart and open arena, it handled them all fine!

We are also playing competitive minesweeper, ha!

Bonus points for Nubbin! I love a good nubbin! (Or at least, I used to, before trackpads became half decent)

Went through the lappy with Mum yesterday and it seemed to go down rather well, so, until I get a phone call about it not being great, all is well, some games, facebook, spotify, firefox and youtube. Mum was mentioning about running android things on it so I might have to see if there's an android emulator for linux mint sometime.

So, Mum has had the laptop for a month now and she's all good with it, which is good news. Might hunt down a spare cheapo lappy for Mint next month.

|edit| Found a dinky laptop on ebay which should do the job, although it doesn't have HDMI on it, VGA and audio out will do the same job essentially.

Runs at an average of 14W also, which is a damn sight less than the PS4 at 87W which has mainly been used for youtube of late

Just hope I win the auction now, well tomorrow around 3pm. If not there's other thinkpads i can check out. It's got bluetooth on it also so I should be able to sync up the PS4 joypads with it for some noice retro gamage

Yeah, the PS4 controller's become my default when gaming on Mac/iPad of late. It's very much an everyman controller, isn't it?

Aye, I was using it on my main PC again of late for some Mario Kart and it's rather handy for it, nice D-Pad, etc.

I could go down the raspberry PI route but they are rare as hens teeth and these Lenovos will do the job for 8 and 16 bit stuff, dunno about N64 / Dreamcast though. Pair it up with a wireless keyboard and mouse and yeah, that would do very nicely in the living room.

Yess, dinky 12.5 inch Lenovo X230 for £33 gets!

Average wattage is between 10-14W should pay for itself in a few months and if my daughter fully breaks her laptop she can just have this as a spare.

SO, It turned up today and after removing "Secure Boot" Formatted an old SSD from a computer I need to chuck out, bunged Linux Mint on it and, well, jobs a goodun. Typing this post from it and the keyboard, whilst lacking a numpad, feels really quite nice to use. Video playback is pretty good. NO optical drive though, booo nayyyy....

Bunged steam on it as well as proton and played a few games from my library on there, all works well, will download TF2 later on tonight to see how / if that runs, but yeah, so far, quite a capable little machine. Just need to see if I can use CS3 suite with WIne and that will be good news hopefully!

If it had a touchscreen it would be 100% ideal I reckon. Anyhow, time to download TF2

TF2 Runs really well Just a bit terrible on input without a mouse

Gonna try and get Tattyshop on there tonight maybe.

Maybe also cover it with anime stickers

Let Layla loose on it over the weekend and Open Arena, TF2 and Minetest ( a free version of minecraft, without mobs, but still, free!) If only I could use my current toolchain for gameboy and NES dev on it, and ideally flash and photoshop 7 or higher then I really wouldn't have any issues with it as my main system.

Love my Lenovo. Touch screen is invaluable and great for artwork. Do have a higher end pen to use with it. It is also what I use for all audio/video editing & mastering. Never been let down by a Lenovo.

It was $606 when I bought it almost 2 years ago. Been thrilled with it, the Zenbook I had previously bought for the same role, apparently has a known thermal defect with the GPU and they are time bombs, so I bought this to use instead and use the Zenbook for writing or other purposes. Lenovo was less than half the price of the Zenbook and has a touch screen to boot.

So, more lappy adventures in Linux, welll... not exactly! Had a play with virtualbox and had to install windows xp sp3, then bung winamp, photoshop cs3, nesasm3, programmers notepad and ...it all runs fine!

I'm amazed by virtualisation from within linux, this is great stuff!
