Vesuvius online RTS

massive war game

homepage
I thought I'd share a game I've been working on for a while now. Its called Vesuvius, and is ran entirely from a website. I have a lot planned to be added, but it is currently in a playable state. If you'd like to be a beta tester for this game, go ahead and sign up and start playing. I'll be interested to know what you think of it.

Sorry, no pictures right now, maybe I can make some at some point.

Latest Update

I've decided to change the site host I was using to a new one. X10hosting's service wasn't too bad, except for all the down-time I had to deal with. And since Vesuvius is supposed to keep running even when nobody's playing, it would over-use the host's resources whenever someone played after it came back up, they'd suspend my hosting account.

Hopefully my new hosting service will be better, but its too soon to tell. They want to know what kind of site you're making before you can start using it, but if you have a worth-while site or idea then they'd be worth a shot.

As far as the game goes, everything has been reset, so if you were playing, you'll have to register again and everything.

Sept 3rd, 2010 - Good news folks, I'm now running Vesuvius on my own web server. This should most likely fix the super-long load times I had from the other server. I had to basically reset the game, didn't know if the different server times would cause issues, but everything should be working now. And yes, I'm still actively working on it, there's been a lot of changes lately. Check it out today!

Same here.

Oh - sorry, I mispelled the game's name... which, the site is actually mispelled by accident - there's an o in vesuvious, and there shouldn't be...

Error - got no results for production query

This is all that I get when I log in...

Mole: Hmm, an interesting problem. I'll have to have a look at that. But the production query isn't a very big deal - I haven't even began using it all yet. The production information you see is a static list, and doesn't reflect what you're really producing. I'm hoping to change that at some point.

I get the same error, so I can't do anything. This is the HTML source:

It looks as if there's an error and that no more HTML is being written by the script afterwards.

Okay... *sigh* I've modified the page to not give up when the production stuff fails. You might still get an error but at least the game will be playable.

Thanks for letting me know about these errors. If you find anymore I'd like to know about them - but remember, the game's not finished yet. There's a few problems left to work out still.

*edit* Okay, I realize now that there could have been a problem with the registration, which means, although some people had structures under their name, they had no production for them. I've since fixed the registration process (players now start with more fields! yay!), and have reset the entire game. If you had an account, please register again. */edit*

Still a few problems registering, the password field is "text" and the city name is "password".

Pretty cool game. A few people from inselkampf were talking about making a better game, and best of them looked a lot like this. Or it would have done -- you are a lot further along. Perhaps this is the new inselkampf for socoder?

Thanks for the error messages guys. Cucco, I've fixed the registration process so newcomers shouldn't get that error now. Mole, I've also fixed the upgrade action, so your error shouldn't happen now.

Cucco, I'm glad you like the game. This is kind of my own venture. I'm hoping to grow a decent player base, and then generate revenue by the on-page ads. So this isn't just a socoder game - invite everyone you know to play! The game has a whole lot more growing left to do, but is now in a playable state, so I'm looking to gain peoples' interest in the project.

Let me know if you find any more bugs.

Upgrade now works. Although, after leaving the page open for a while, it will now be MINUS 8 minutes until finished!

Mole: Currently I hardly have any player base. I'm trying to grow that, though there isn't much to play yet. I'm currently working on research paths (among everything else), which will offer many more units and buildings. I plan on having this game appear as though its in current time in history, but just so far away from civilization that you have to research everything on your own. You'll have oil to consume, tanks, jets possibly futuristic weapons as well. But it'll just take time to set all this up.

Yeah, the clock thing never seems to notice when time hits zero, so it just keeps ticking down further and further. By that time, just refreshing the page will give you the proper update.
Saturday, 23 May 2009, 02:44
JL235
Then can't you have it notice when time is equal or less then zero?

My resources are all very large negative numbers!

mindstorm8191
JL: I probably could... I thought I had something like that coded in, but I didn't. The code is rather new to me so I was a bit uneasy about adding more to it. I've added a part to display different results when its at or under zero, so it should look a bit better...

cucco, I don't know what happened with you there, but I'll edit your player so you at least have a positive value...

Oops. -99 food. I think it has something to do with the problem creating troops...
Sunday, 24 May 2009, 18:07
mindstorm8191
Hmm, yeah it could be the troop production - I don't think I have limits on how many can be made at a time, based on resources! Let me see if I can fix that.

...Or, I'll put it on my task list. Gotta get this message system working too!

The 'Production' stuff; are those numbers added to the on-hand resources each hour?

And can I have some more food please?
Friday, 29 May 2009, 11:26
shroom_monk
Well, I just registered, and have a quick question: why does 'password again' and 'city name' have password stars, but 'password' does not? Surely it should be the two password fields that are protected, not the city name?

|edit| Also, on the login, shouldn't it say username instead of email? |edit|

Bit of a security problem - if you edit your cookie you can log in as anyone just by changing the number.

I built another Construction Yard but still cannot have two building projects going on at the same time..

Dunno what that is on about either. Am I being attacked? Do troops show up on the map or are they invisible? Cos I can't see that I have any troops. Not even entirely sure how to train them (what do I put in the text box at the barracks?).

Oh and one of my dirt yards was built as a level 3, and its condition is 'error'.
Wednesday, 03 June 2009, 09:44
mindstorm8191
Oh... umm... the construction yard isn't exactly a 'working' building yet. There's a lot of work left to do here! The stuff you saw there is probably someone else attacking someone, and that's the debugging output. There's more to clean up than just that, I'm sure. Also, I don't have a level 3 dirtyard declared yet, so you'll just have to live with being unable to gain resources from that location. I still haven't figured out why some fields reach level 3 when they shouldn't. Does anyone have any ideas?
Thursday, 16 July 2009, 23:10
mindstorm8191
Well folks, players can now raid resources from other players. I'm still working on getting the game into a solid performance, so if anyone finds bugs, let me know.

I have an issue I need to figure out, and thought I'd ask you guys. Should have have a whole lot of different buildings for constructing troops? Or just a few? Right now I only have one building for making units, and only one unit type to make, but my next phase of development will be to expand on that. Please let me know what your vote is.
