Having just got a new ipod, I would like to convert a couple of dvds to watch on it, can anyone recommend a free converter? or better, is there a windows codec so I can use any old video converter to do the job?

I use Videora.

Make sure you're careful with what resolutions you use. I had a lot of trouble with widescreen movies; it will keep stretching them out to full screen. Haven't solved that problem yet. :/

I use Mediacoder. It has special device profiles for iPods, as well as other devices, and can be used to transcode pretty much anything to anything...

I'm currently trying Handbrake, I'll give those others a try once I see what this outputs like. blanko - almost all my dvd's are widescreen, videora might be irritating.

only if you get caught . But really, if he has purchased the dvd, so long as he's not redistributing it, there's nothing wrong with him converting it to another format so that he can view it on his ipod.

Well, morally there is nothing wrong, but technically, I think they still have a problem with it. But, who cares what they think?

Yes, I think in most countries it is illegal to 'backup' movies you have bought (same with music and games), but as its for personal use and I doubt whatever legal organization regulates such things are going to burst through my door for watching a movie on my ipod, then I'm going to do it.

Note - Handbrake converted to the wrong format (itunes played it, but it refused to copy to my ipod cos it was the wrong format.

*wonders if iTunes knew it wasn't a purchased vid, so wouldn't copy it....*

I doubt very much that it's illegal. As much as the movie companies would love it if you purchased 800 copies of the same movie (vhs, dvd, hd-dvd, blu-ray, ipod, wmv, spinal's ds format, etc), I don't think that's a very good thing to do.

Googling found Jodix ipod video converter.

Surely apple wouldn't mind people converting their own stuff, home movies for example.

I also tried videora ipod converter, but it came out spanish and wouldn't convert the full movie in one go, had to do the .vob files separately, so the thing came out in 4 parts.

gunna try that one you said jay....

|edit| no I wont, I already tried it, kept crashing |edit|

Why the hell did they not put a converter into itunes, very stupid thing to do it you ask me, supporting a video format but not giving you the tools to convert to it, after spending all that money and everything.

[slightly offtopic] I'm disappointed that they encrypted the firmware in the new ipod classic, can't use ipodwizard on it until someone cracks it (if ever).

|edit| I'm currently testing ffmpeg, with the following input -
Now if I can just find a way to join all the .vob files before (or during) the conversion... |edit|

Damn thing is spanish again, I'm going to re-rip the dvd, this time removing absolutly everything I don't need.
