Socoder -> On Topic -> Firefox Plugins

Firefox is really nice because it offers lots of extensions, something I haven't found an equal abundance of in other browsers. Since there are so many of them, I'm confident you don't have all the extensions you ought to. So share with the rest of us your favorites!

You can post more or less than three if you want to. Here's my list:
  1. 1-Click Answers: Teh best plugin evar. Alt+Click a word to know what it means (great when reading on Wikipedia).
  2. Image Zoom: Ultra-handy image resizing. Hold right mouse button and scroll to resize.
  3. Web Developer Toolbar: A true classic. Outline HTML elements, change forms' submission methods, disable meta redirects, set exact window size, generate source code from page, change CSS in realtime... The list goes on! Not only handy if you do web development.

Here are a few:

  • Gmail Notifier: Lets me know when I get emails, of course that is handy.
  • Cooliris: It used to be called PicLens. It's a beautiful wall of pictures. It can also play YouTube videos and well, I really can't explain how cool it is. Just try it.
  • Web Developer Toolbar: I second this. It does wonders.

Has anyone tried Ubiquity? You can only get it with Firefox 3, but it is absolutely amazing. Removes the need for most other extenstions, as stuff like translating, googling, wiki-ing, word-defining, etc can all be done through it.

Ubiquity is nice... I only seem to use the TinyUrl command, but it's great as I don't have to leave the keyboard for the mouse to do it unlike a bookmarklet.

BugMeNot lets you bypass login boxes such as registration-required newspaper websites.

I finally caved and started using NoScript - if a website that you trust needs javascript, simply whitelist the domain. Also blocks media such as videos and flash (meaning the Flashblock plugin is less useful now)

Faviconize Tabs set to automatically fav-iconise anything is wonderful when you regularly open > 50 tabs.

JSView makes it easy to load the source code of JavaScript and CSS files used by a page.

Thirding Web Dev Toolbar. That extension is completely magic.

I'll second NoScript and third the Web Developer toolbar. Overall though I reckon that Firebug has to be about the most useful extension.

I recommend:
Firebug - Good for Debugging

AdBlock Plus - Murders stupid take-over ads

Foxmarks - heaps useful, syncronizes bookmarks across computers

MySpace Toolbar Ultimate - if you use myspace, circumvents the horrible interface and lets you do things from other webpages

The GooglePedia extension is one of my faviourites. When you do a Google search it goes off and finds the most relevant Wikipedia page and displays it on the right side of your search results.

1. Download Helper: A useful GUI that only displays the larger resources on a webpage, ie to d0wnl0ad s0ngs from an 0nline music player
2. Ad Block Plus, Ad Block Text: In combination, blocks both image and text ads
3. Grease Monkey!

Never tried D/l helper, but I was just about to recommend the other two

I was unable to find this on the FireFox add-ons page. Can you post a link?

IE Tab is a must have. It allows rendering pages in FireFox using the IE rendering engine Trident instead of Gecko.

Apparently IE Tab can make Firefox quite unstable though. I don't know if that's because Trident is inherently awful, but if you don't use it often you might want to disable the extension when you're not using it.

If you use IE tab it's all integrated in one browser and that's a big plus. I use it for that one site in a hundred that doesn't work in FF.

There is no need to disable it though, when it's not in use it's not in use. I've had stability issues with it but it was in use at the time, and it was only the once. I was watching The Apprentice via the BBC iPlayer (back when it was IE only).

I used to have one on Firefox 1 that would automatically parse URLs and make them into links.
Hella useful on message boards, especially the ones that don't allow linking.

Anyone know of a current one to do that?

Linkification, perhaps? If I remember right, that's the one I used to use and it was quite a nice extension. But it did make page rendering speed a bit slower so I ended up uninstalling it.

I Just discovered TinyMenu! Collapses the file/edit/view menu into one small button. Move the stuff in your navigation toolbar into the menu bar, hide the navigation toolbar, and you've saved a lot of space!

It's especially great on my laptop because I've only got a 800 pixel high widescreen res, two gnome panels and the web developer toolbar talking up room too. It's not such an issue on my PC, but I'll be installing it there too.

Yeay, vertical space!

Yeay! I've currently moved the address bar onto the same row as the menu to save space, but this might spare even more Thanks for the tip, Hobo.

Domain Details.
I have it, and it can be useful every once in awhile. It tells you details about the server, like the IP, the country it's in, (not always perfect, but whatever) and the type of server. (Apache, Resin, etc.)
