steve_ancell	I applied for a voluntary position with ’’Mind Brighton’’, an organisation that has been helping me with my mental health problems; I have an interview on 23rd May.

steve_ancell	Working voluntarily doesn't mean I'm not getting anything out of it, my payment will be free training and learning more about my mental health condition. I will also gain skills and work experience that I can use to get back in with the rat race. The job is within their new Information and Advice service, a lot of it will be updating their website using some sort of content management tool, I've never used that kind of tool before so that will be another potentially useful skill to add to my list.

More (young) people need to realise that volunteering is the way to experience in a field they are interested in or even just to fill in the space on your CV if you cannot find paid work. What looks better, volunteering down your local animal sanctuary or taking Oxford United to the premier league on champ manager or whatever?

steve_ancell	I was also going to talk to my Work and Learning coordinator how to go about setting up a local computer programming club. So far, all the computer groups in East Sussex seem to just be about using applications such as Joomla, Dreamweaver etc, etc; they're not casual or dynamic enough, I want to change that. I want to start a club where no-one is "the boss", where we all club together, learn from each other, teach the ones that are new to programming and just use any tools available to make games and stuff rather than stick to just one programming language, some people may not be able to get the grasp of one programming language but might do OK with another. The club would be very casual and dynamic, a bit like a SoCoder but face to face. I would also make a website so that far away people can get some action.

steve_ancell	Now that I have come to terms with it, I can now tell you the outcome. I didn't get the position but my details have been kept in the Advice and Info department's system, they will be recruiting again in a few months. I have spoken to the Work and Learning Coordinator at Mind, I have arranged to go and see her next week to discuss other options. I will keep you posted.

steve_ancell	Cheers Ben. The reason they turned me down wasn't to do with not being able to do the job, they actually enjoyed meeting me and actually came to the conclusion that I know more about computers than most of their staff put together; they were more concerned that I would clash with the unexpected large group of people that managed to get past the interview. I know that 15 other people doesn't sound like a lot to most people, but I have problems getting on in smaller groups due to my mental state. In the actual job itself not all 15 people would be working on the same days, but during the initial training sessions all would be present.

steve_ancell	The reason that the group got quite large is because the Advice and Information service is a new addition to Mind, future training sessions for any new applicants would be much smaller groups.
