Open World Games


Why is every game being released these days an open world game?
Off the top of my head: Zelda, Horizon Zero Dawn/Forbidden West, Cyberpunk 2077, Starfield, Hogwarts Legacy, Assassin’s Creed, Red Dead Redemption, GTA, Saint’s Row, Spider-Man, even SONIC (Frontiers) is open world now.
What’s next? Platdude’s Open World Adventures?

When done right, it's a fantastical opportunity for exploration and a unique challenge for storytelling.
See Zelda.

When done wrong, it's a very obviously lazy way to hit the "random me a game" button with incredibly obvious pseudo-random elements.

Starlink and No Man's Sky are two very different beasts, yet are fundamentally the same.

Playing the two games back to back, you'll find a ton of similarities. Random planets. Pseudo random storyline. Worlds to explore. Etc.
But, somehow, No Man's Sky feels like an exploration, whilst.. there's just "something" about Starlink that feels like the developer pushed a "random me a game" button.
I can't put my finger on why, though, because in my heart, I know that's exactly what No Man's Sky actually is!
It's very odd.

But in answer to the question. Because pushing a "giant random world" button is easy, and makes it look like you did a ton more work than you did. Taking the time to fill out the giant random world well takes great skill. See GTA .

I think open world games can last longer. I have been playing Minecraft for 5+ years now. Updates add new things every year. In a few years new ai could add even more fun stuff in the world.

They added a higher and deeper world a while ago, Knowing there are ore veins there now that fill a whole double chest, is a nice reward. I was listening to a audio book that mentioned that rewards activates the brain. This open world game has lots of that.

Exploration and discovery is also a populair human thing and rewarding.

In No Man's Sky, this week, I flew in my ship from my "Isle Plat" home, to a distress call on the other side of the planet.
I did what was expected, then noticed a couple of Knowledge Stones in the immediate vicinity.
I walked around, activated them, then looked far off in the distance. My "Isle Plat" base was 8 hours walk away.
Of course, I could've just jumped back into my ship and flown the way, but..
*shrugs*
I haven't experienced an EPIC walk in No Man's Sky, before.

I loaded up a few Quantum Leap Podcast episodes, and off I trotted.

It's been a few days, hopping in and out for hour-long sessions, wandering some more, feeding creatures, digging up random objects, activating more Knowledge Stones..
.. And annoyingly whenever I look at the little "Isle Plat Base" icon, it still says I'm about 8 hours away.
No matter.
I'm enjoying the walk!

My pockets are full of milk and eggs, now.

The mac and ipados version for no mans sky might drop any day now. I am going to play it right away. It seems that the world(s) are a 'bit' larger than in other open world games.

I have not traveled more than a few biomes away in Minecraft. Trying to keep the save game small. I was just reading someone who had a saved world of 1 terabyte. My main save game is stil below 100mb.
