JPC: x86 PC Emulator

https://www-jpc.physics.ox.ac.uk/getjpc.html
"JPC is a pure Java emulation of an x86 PC with fully virtual peripherals. It runs anywhere you have a JVM, whether x86, RISC, mobile phone, set-top box, possibly even your refrigerator!"

If you try the demo, it runs DOS, with the original Commander Keen 1 and a few other games included!!!

It also runs Linux, although I think linux may have crashed when I ran it

It's not as fast as DOS Box or VirtualBox, but it's impressive all the same - especially as it fits in a browser window.

I think this perhaps has potential for getting casual desktop games to run in the browser without having to port anything to Java or rely on Internet Explorer & ActiveX...

Although considering keen1 ran slower there than it did on a computer I had ten years ago, it may take a little while before it's fast enough.

cool find! that is pretty neat~ you're right about the speeds though, but I think that's more java's fault than anything
