Google Fiber - One step closer to Google domination?

Google Now Wants Your Internets Even More!
So Google plans to roll out 1gbps internet with the news of this 'Google Fiber' deal. They have a caveat though- It's only for a select area as a test bed, and they encouraged medium-sized cities to write in how they would benefit from "ultra high-speed broadband".

Normally, I'd not give a damn about it- but it appears the city I live in had a huge outpouring for it, which is kind of strange considering there are other medium-sized towns with a heavier tech history, but there are a lot of businesses in the area, not to mention a lot of residences. They had a huge event downtown where a bunch of people spelled out google in the middle of the city park with glowsticks- Pretty Cool, considering all of the other cities did lame shit like:

Topeka, KS changed their name to Google, as did Rancho Cucomonga (Rancho Googlemonga)
Sarasota, FL's mayor swam with sharks
people in Duluth, MN went nude swimming in an ice lake (ugh)




I'm kind of perplexed by this. Right now, I'm on a 60mbit line, which is plenty enough it seems. I don't download much and the speed seems to work. Don't know what i'd need 1gbit net for-- Everything works adequately now!

I'm a little wary of Google, having for a few years skirted in and out of their Headquarters on trips and business meetings, talked to many frustrating Google support guys, as well as critics saying how their 'Don't be evil' B.S. is just a front. Personally, I think the nation from 1984 could have very well been called Google. I'm not one of those super-conspiracy nutters who thinks they're out to get me, but imagine how much data influxes through Google... It leaves me feeling a little hesitant. I was an affiliate for the longest time, trying my hand at the Adwords game to make a few scraps of cash here and there. Some of it worked, some of it didn't- But a few incidences where i fell hard outside of my control (Click Fraud, Google Reviewers being lazy and my account getting 'slapped' later because someone didn't do their job), I feel like google is just yanking me around by a chain. I'm not exactly Anti-Google, but one can't help but feel like they've transcended the need for your cash directly. They're after your data, and the metrics attached to it. Quoting Adwerdz.com from above:

 		Google has never done anything evil. People just get paranoid. It's really stupid how people are so angry at Google for having so much of their data that THEY handed over.

Google has earned my trust.

 		I'm on the fence about it. It's awesome what all they have done- Data aggregation wise. They're going after every possible metric on every possible thing you can think of, which has it's ups and downs.

My main concern is the "accidental" monopoly - What happens when Google unifies all of these services, and because everyone uses it for it's superiority, You begin to see controlled media through one source. A lot of people criticize google for how it calculates 'page rank' - Which i can agree with the loyalist, How would you do it without seeming to bias towards a certain criteria?

Now i know, all media has bias, and there's been many people before and after Google where you can get your information, it's just a little creepy that they're breaking out of being a search engine, and are now beginning to build infrastructure. They become one-stop shop, and therefor what they say, goes. Now- Google has been good in the past about not forcing themselves down your throat, but like Stealth said, People get paranoid when an organization gets big- I'll definitely prod around when Google Fiber comes to my area to see if the big G is trying to subversively dig their claws deeper into you, or are just trying to provide a nice service.
