Hello from Solaris

Solaris Express Developer edition to be exact

Next week I am getting my hard disk changed, and finally the dvd drive too. It would be this Friday, but Evesham computers rang and asked me to give the engineer the day off.

So with the knowledge that my hard drive is soon to be taken away to be hacked apart by credit fraudsters, I decided to finally try out Solaris 10.

First, the installation is long. Probably 2 hours. Then booting it up takes ages (feels like 5 minutes). But the environment itself is really nice. Little things seem really fast, like instant. Just changing the desktop background, it just seems so much more responsive.

However there is one LARGE flaw, SoCoder looks terrible. The font is tiny, Jay please look into Solaris support, and then Amiga OS 4 too (which is next on my list). Java Media Player is also shit, really shit. I wrote a better one for my first assignment here at university. I also find the fact I have to right-click to eject, rather then just press it on the DVD-drive, VERY annoying. I don't understand why they not have that built in.

But this got me thinking, it's odd how free OS alternatives are advertised in opposition to Windows, with bad Vista and so on, and yet so many ideas desktop environments are based on Windows. I also think Windows is easily more user-friendly.

In other news, Greenfoot won the 'Duke's Choice Award' in the 'Java Technology in Education' at Java One, only a few days ago.

I guess that you could always scroll in a bit to blow up the text if its too small? On the sidebar it looks if Solaris dosent come with the font used and has defaulted to times new roman. If you get the font then that should make it look normal again. Anyway have fun with your new OS.

To fix the firefox bug, go
Options -> Content -> Fonts & Colors -> Advanced
and set the minimum font size to something legible.

Hmmm. A circumnavigation of the OS globe . Out of interest where can you get hardware to run Amiga OS4 on? Presumably you need some swanky ppc machine or add-on card.
