Socoder -> On Topic -> Thoughts on Unregistered Comment System...

I added one to AGameAWeek's GameList, so it's not exactly hard to pull off, but having to moderate it might be a bit of a killer.

So, quick discussion for all.

A) Go my own way, it wouldn't be too hard to add a couple of boxes for none-registered users, and slap it into the database.

B) Disqus : I've been seeing this crop up in a lot of places, but Engadget added it this morning, so... Must be trustable, right? .. I'm probably too lazy to integrate it well, though, especially with all our themes.. that'd probably drive me nuts!

C) Don't bother, Jay.. Folk who are too lazy to register, don't deserve to comment..

and, either way, who's up for Mod Duties?

I'm presuming this is for SoCoder?

Unregistered comment system seems fine in principle, and at the very least I think it deserves trialing. But be prepared to have to alter the system over time to solve any issues.

I'd also be happy to be a moderator.

While it's OK in principle, I can see spam becoming an issue once any spambots track it down. Also, it's not that hard to register, and creating an account at least encourages people to come back, right?

Ultimately though, I guess it couldn't hurt to at least give it a try. Which parts of the site were you thinking could use it?

You could add a captcha to avoid automated spam bots. I've heard if you have it based on images, like "how many cats are in this picture", then it's practically impossible to get past.

I say just try, and if it goes wrong adjust it.

AgameAWeek has no capture, but also only gets about 1/2 spammy bits a day... Not sure if we need a captcha..

Stealth
Add a honeypot field.

It's a text input that is named "email" or something else a spam bot will love. Hide it with CSS. Works wonders. Spam bots fill it out and then you can silently ignore the request.

Quit posting and try Google.
