Socoder -> Off Topic -> Car transmission prices

Here's a random question, But i figured i would ask. My roommate has a '93 ford probe, but it seems the transmission is shot in it. It can get to 2nd but never shifts into 3rd (it's automatic, just to be clear). Putting on overdrive causes it to drop into neutral, so we figured 'screw it, its probably transmission problems' ... the bad thing is, we paid 500$ USD for it, and most estimates we've seen for ANY car transmission repair tops at about 1900 dollars. So, has any one else had to deal with this with any other car? if so, what did you pay?

Automatic transmission ?... Have you checked the transmission fluid ?.

That's why I stick with a manual gearbox, less expensive when it goes wrong.

|edit| I always thought that the Ford Probe was badged as the new Capri in the USA ... Ah well, that's another thing that I learned today . |edit|

|edit| You may be able to source one for a cheaper price at a knackers yard. Also AFAIK, the Probe is a Mazda 6 under the shell, so maybe you could look at one of those in the yard too. The parts may be the same, just the same way as Daewoo and Vauxhall/Opel parts are. |edit|

|edit| Also... Even if there is enough fluid in the transmission, empty it out and put some fresh fluid in. Auto Transmission fluid, looses it's viscosity over time. |edit|

Car transmissions are a pricey component to fix.

The one is my car is a tad screwy, I hope it doesn't go bad cause I don't have the money to replace it.

To Check Your Transmission Fluid (In case you need to know.)

1) Pop your hood and leave your car running.

2) Find the transmission fluid dip stick (not your oil).

3) Check the fluid level. Transmission oil is light red and can turn clear when its hot.

4) If your low on transmission oil, go to an auto store and buy the correct kind (ask if you don't know what kind).

5) Leave your car on. The fluid goes in the dip stick hole, you'll probably need a cone to help pour it. Be careful not to put too much in, because if you do you can ruin your engine.

6) Cycle through the gears (on an automatic just put it in all the different gears available).

7) Be gentle the first mile or so after putting in the fluid.

Hopefully that helps (if your not car savvy). My dad was a car mechanic, so I learn stuff. Haha.

If you need to just change your transmission fluid, take it in to a car shop.

We've already checked the fluid, it wasn't that.

Well $1900 sounds a bit on the high end for a new transmission.

But it definitely sounds like you need a new transmission (unfortunately).

It may even be cheaper to scrap it, and find another second-hand car.

Changing a gearbox is not much fun, trust me, I've changed a lot of them.

I went to the ford dealer and asked for a quote for the repair of a ford engine and they told me $2200.

It cannot cost that much at the dealer.

You might be able to get a used one and fix it that way.

Problem is, It was a kick in the nuts... We had a scrap ford probe that we took the transmission out of to put in there. We got it to a mechanic who would have done it for 350-400 dollars, only to find out:The car uses an EAT4 transmission. Anyone who knows alot about cars will argue up and down with you that a Probe/Mazda tranny is a CD4E. But! It was made in that little prototype window when ford was first rolling out the new probe line and hadn't switched to the new models. So, with our bastard black sheep car, the only option is a rebuild. We've pretty much scoped out all possible scenarios: Bad TCM, Fluid is bad, Speed sensor, a bad gasket in the gear link. Asking the previous owner, it seems he belted it pretty hard and didnt change fluid (Yep, it could be chalked up to bad fluid, but about 10 years too late) and it warped 3rd and 4th.

Overall, we're getting a few rough estimates... anywhere between 800 and 1200 dollars to fix. We're driving there tomorrow, wish us luck >.>

My Problem here was that I also had found a mechanic for the Ford Taurus Engine.

When I went back to him he had changed occupations. His price was 275.

Those sort of prices are the reason why I used to do my own car repairs. I'm not so young and fit anymore though, but I can still do minor repairs. But as for changing engines and gearboxes, it's the end of an era for me, I'm not doing that anymore.

So... It looks like I'm going to have to get used to paying though the nose for major repairs.

Well, we've resolved it.. cost a s*** load of the green stuff and alot of headache. Turns out, 3rd and 4th were welded together (Huzzah) and many other various snowballed problems. 2000 dollars later and its almost complete. Going tomorrow to pick it up and deal the sweet music of dead bank accounts.

So yeah, Put fluid in your cars, or pay out the ass for it.

$2,000 USD, that's about £1,037 GBP in my language. You could have picked-up a perfectly roadworthy car for that. These garage mechanics seriously are extracting the organic fluid.

Yeah, could have, but my roommate is set on a Ford Probe. it's kind of 'his car', y'know? Our boss offered to help buy a Madza 3, but was turned down just because we thought this project would be easier on the brain.

I wouldn't call it a failure. It has a minimal amount of miles, and is practically new. Problem is, we paid 200 under bluebook. Ah well...
