Obama won!

What do you think?

Personally I don't like his continiued fighting in Afghanistan, but I like his work for a world without nukes and his healthcare reform.

I know, the whole thing seems a bit far-fetched (AFAIK he wasn't mentioned by anyone as a potential candidate), but I definately think he's not the worst choice they could have made...

If I re-invented the door knocker, do ya' reckon I could win the "NO Bell" Peace Prize ?

The fact is, anybody can stand up at a conference and promote nuclear disarmament, but is there world peace ?... NO !

I was surprised when I read the news article, I mean... what did he do for peace?

'Since taking office in January, President Obama has pursued an ambitious international agenda including a push for peace in the Middle East and negotiations over Iran's nuclear programme.'

It ain't a real Nobel prize unless it's handed out by the Swedes!

I would have thought he'd have got it eventually, but right now seems a little bit soon. It's a credit to him the things he has done, but I don't think he should really have got it until he pulls out of Iraq.

While I'm not sure I would have chosen him for the award, I do think it can be justified. He has done a lot for race relations, peace talks between warring nations, and nuclear disarmament, among other things.

That said, I agree with Shroom that it'd have been better to wait and see what happens.

On the upside, think of it as a binding contract -- now Obama has to put effort into peacemaking.

Obama might not be the worst candidate out there, but he couldn't possibly have been the best out of the hundred-or-so nominees. The peace prize has become more of a trendiness prize than anything else. Bono was a candidate, Al Gore won, and now Obama. Conversely, the literature award is always given to random, obscure, hitherto unknown writers. I ignore those two Nobels.

It seems Obama gives the ~1 million dollars attached to the prize to charities, at least that's a good thing!

I agree with JNK and Phoenix, who both elucidated my opinion much more clearly than I could have.

Including the part about the Swedes.
