Socoder -> What Have You Done -> What Have You Done : 14th July 2010

Jayenkai
A slight rename this week, since it's become apparent that a few people haven't noticed this feature for the past couple of months..

Ups

What did you get done this week.
  • 200th Game!
  • um...

Did everything turn out as planned?
I left a couple of bugs in, and there were features planned that didn't get in, but RetroRaiderII turned out lovely.

    Downs

    What didn't you get done?
  • iPhing
  • Socoder stuff
  • "200" video
  • Newer JNKPlat2010 release
  • Updated Microbes
  • Probably more..

    Why not?
RetroRaider took all my spare time to get done. I was surprised by how complicated most of the stuff actually was! I think the original must've taken a few weeks to do.
Either that, or I'm getting slower at all this!

    Now

What are you working on right now?
Doing Socoder tweaking. Still not sure what's going on the frontpage, though...

    How's that going?
    Slowly!

    Next

What's the plan for the week ahead?
  • iPhing
  • Microbes
  • JNKPlat
  • Highscores
  • Game with a Train
  • Possibly sleep, but probably not!

    ---

You can copy+paste the BBCode from the box below, or structure however else you'd like...

    Ups

What did you get done this week.
  • I sort of got my live wallpaper done.
  • Researched Android market policies and such, what it looks like as far as sales go, etc.

Did everything turn out as planned?
Never does. Doing some research on Android's market left me rather disappointed at the prospects of publishing my wallpaper on the same. A lot of live wallpapers don't seem to see a lot of sales, and I imagine this is because you're essentially buying an animated, interactive wallpaper, and it's probably hard to justify that purchase after a certain price.

I'm still trying to figure out what the best pricing is that doesn't turn people off and doesn't leave me with little to no return (Google takes 30% of all transactions, so as much as I'd like to, I can't sell it for 75 cents without it destroying my own income on it). It's looking like $1.10 or $1.25 is about as low as I can go and still be happy about it.

    Downs

    What didn't you get done?
  • More work on NUIT- input changes, more view implementations, more testing, more documentation, and at some implementations of the renderer for Quartz and other APIs need to be written...

    Why not?
Because I'm lazy and these are the parts of the code that are far less interesting to work on.

    Now

What are you working on right now?
    Live wallpaper for Android.

    How's that going?
See above. Mostly doing testing and trying to find more people to test it and give me their opinions on it. That part is not going so well.

    Next

What's the plan for the week ahead?
  • NUIT, assuming I get around to it.
  • Writing a documentation generator of some sort for ooc, since we now have a json backend that spits out a lot of info about the compiled code, including special documentation comments.
  • Probably finishing off the live wallpaper, pushing it to the market, and then going around on websites dedicated to Android and such and seeing what I can do about announcing it (it depends a lot on the culture of those sites and whether or not it looks like they're open to that - if not, then I have no plans of insulting 'em by posting what would essentially be the world's worst advertisement). I suppose I need to work on how I sell it as well, since I'm not in advertising...

    Ups

What did you get done this week.
  • Collected debt from friend
  • Bought BP shares
  • Did exercise program
  • Started selling some shit on eBay (headphones)

Did everything turn out as planned?
Hugely pissed off with the BP shares. I was interested in buying them about a month ago. I attempted to set up a share trading account, but could never prove that I wasn't the next Godfather (I need a utility bill in my name; which I don't have....). So instead of buying them at 315p back then, which was what I desperately wanted to do, I had to buy them at 397.7p on Monday. The investment is only very small (500 quid), but I have missed out on about 140 quid so far. And that makes me angry.

    Downs

    What didn't you get done?
  • Put debt collected in bank
  • Make a CV
  • Get a job

    Why not?
    Laziness.

    Now

What are you working on right now?
Organising a pub trip for this evening, hopefully.

    How's that going?
    Vaguely well

    Next

What's the plan for the week ahead?
  • liquidate headphones using eBay
  • Hope that the latest BP cap has worked so I make a shit load of money
  • Do some DIY stuff and do the finishing touches to a couple of projects.

    Downs

  • More work than anticipated
  • Renewed my car insurance

    Now

What are you working on right now?

    How's that going?
    Slowly!

  • Notifications fixed

  • Taught someone OOP basics

Did everything turn out as planned?
Pretty much! Got all of that done in:

    Downs

    What didn't you get done?
  • Summer Reading- I'll get to that later
  • My own website- I'm deciding to hold that one off for awhile

    Why not?
    Too busy doing other stuff!

    Now

What are you working on right now?
By July 31st, we're hoping to have version 5 of the website out, along with a new awesome layout.

  • Keep working on website

    Mog

    Ups

What did you get done this week.
  • Working on an engine for a friend to update his old action-adventure RPG (www.fifthindependent.com/?page_id=895 Old version - what i plan to replace)
  • Neglected Sleep! Weee
  • Slowly getting back into music

Did everything turn out as planned?
Oddly enough, Yeah. The engine is falling into place quite nicely. I'm using it to teach my friend Blitzmax, and gives me an excuse to make a decent framework for later use. I hop around on projects a lot, but meh... I guess it's healthy if i at least get something done.

    Downs

    What didn't you get done?
  • Smashed my Korg nanoKey - Dodgy piece of shit!
  • Lack of sleep! Weee!
  • Anything i planned to do last week.

    Why not?
the nanoKey, long story short - They're cheap little MIDI controllers made of laptop keys that pop off if you so even cast a hard glance at them, they fuck up and decide to drop notes / that they have too many keys and start loosing teeth like a drug addict. Was recording and Pewwww! 3 shot off and completely ruined a song, so i made it eat floor, then boot... then pavement, then car tire, and then boot some more. I think i even chewed on it a little.. and then punched it.

Plus last few days were particularly busy, and people thought it'd be fun to blow up my mobile all day when i'm trying to sleep, So i'm overall pretty shot at the moment. Time to go pay stoopid house payments D:

    Now

What are you working on right now?
What is it usually... Oh yes, Waking up.

    How's that going?
There's a skeezy looking man who just rang the bell. Think i'll pretend i'm not here.

    Next

What's the plan for the week ahead?
  • Get a new MIDI controller that doesn't suck.
  • Keep on keeping on with this new engine-y framework thing
  • Bake Jay an awesome cake?

I've been doing a major overhaul on my Vesuvius game for the past several weeks. I have recently found a free php editor which lets you connect via FTP and edit files directly on a remote website. Its pretty nice, and has made editing things and finding bugs alot easier.

    Ups

What did you get done this week.
I've been working on updating internal website pages that help me modify troops and buildings. Some of it could be considered cosmetic, but with a better layout it'll be easier to view everything for each unit & building.

Did everything turn out as planned?
So far so good, though I mistakenly over-wrote my actual homepage when saving it one night! Had to re-write that.

    Downs

    What didn't you get done?
Updating the attack code for troops, plus improving it to handle more than one troop type, and attacks by and against buildings.

    Why not?
My original plan for how attack and defense points would work wasn't fully thought out. I've now got a better design, where each unit falls into one of several categories, and their defense value is based solely on that. We'll see how it works in practice!

    Now

What are you working on right now?
Still working on the internal editing pages. Most buildings have prerequisites, and having them on the same page as all the other building information should help some.

    How's that going?
The basic prerequisite system I have is fairly simple, but applying that in a way that can be easily viewed and edited is complicated. It may take some time, but I'll get it.

    Next

What's the plan for the week ahead?
Apply the new ideas for troop defense values into the attacking code, and remove any of the old stuff. Then, see if I can get units other than swordsmen working properly in the game. After that I'm sure I can find more to work on - there's lots left to do!

Oh, if anyone wants to check out my Vesuvius game, its at https://vesuvius.ismywebsite.com

    Ups

What did you get done this week?
  • I drew
  • I spent time at Norefjell Quality Resort
  • I drew some more
  • And then I drew some more

Did everything turn out as planned?
    Yeah, more or less.

    Downs

    What didn't you get done?
  • I didn't wash the dishes or visit Socoder all that much,

    Why not?

  • because I was busy drawing!

    Now

What are you working on right now?

  • I'm working on improving my drawing skills and getting some items I need for a drawing book I'm working through. I'm also working on teaching myself how to better utilize the graph editor in 3DS Max.

    How's that going?

OK... the graph editor is a complex little thingy, but I'm getting there...

    Next

What's the plan for the week ahead?
  • Drawing!
  • Getting some things I need to do drawing excersizes!
  • Working on learning the graph editor!

Note about online PHP editors.. I used to use one of those, years ago, then the proggy crashed on me and I lost my script.. Didn't have it on the server, that was lost when the proggy crashed, and didn't have it on my HD either, since I wasn't saving a local copy.. "Didn't need to, I was doing it online"
