Socoder -> On Topic -> Thoughts on Go

So I decided to play around with Go a bit. I wrote a simple static blog generator, since Go seems particularly suited for web stuff.

It feels like a mixture between C and Python, with strong static type checking. I like it. The standard library is more fleshed out than those of C and C++, with out-of-the-box support for dealing with the file system, JSON, creating an HTTP server, Unicode and image manipulation. Concurrency support is supposedly one of its flagship features, but I haven't really worked with that. It's obviously geared towards making web stuff, and I can see myself using it for that in the future.

It's also cross-platform, and I wonder how it would stand in game development. The main problem in this area would probably be maturity, since there aren't a lot of libraries available for this and there aren't a lot of people using Go for game development. If this were to change though, I could see Go being quite useful for game dev too.

I remember giving Go a shot when it was brand new, but back then the documentation was crap and the interface was changing every day. This seems to be better now. The documentation is decent, and you can usually find something on StackOverflow when you have a problem.

Has anyone tried it? What are your thoughts?

I think I lost the plot here, could you remind us exactly what you mean by "Go"?, linkage would be good.

Oh. Here I was thinking this was about the board game I've never quite got the hang of.

I thought exactly the same when I read the first line of the first post.

Haha, sorry, maybe I should've added a link or something. I can't play that board game either. Let's have a topic about that instead.
