’’Computer says ’No’’’ - lappy died this a.m. Repair/replace later this week hopefully. So in the mean time, if I’m not around as much, that’s why

Aww. Never fun when a system croaks.. Damn modern systems don't last like the old ones, do they?!

I've had the lappy about five years, so it's lasted well. I don't want to get rid though as -

a) It worked well (until it didn't).
b) Setting up a new machine (and modem, printer etc.) will take forever
c) Getting Android stuff sorted is a bastard
d) New machines come with Windows 8. [Shudder]
e) I'll lose everything I've not backed up - which isn't a great deal, but there are still important bits & bobs on there, including updates to stuff I was working on.
f) All my (non web) emails will be lost
g) I can't possibly remember ALL my log-in details for my site and all the forums I visit
h) I'll have to go out shopping and actually spend money on a new machine.

Let's hope it's an easy fix. I'd haev a go myself if it was a desktop - I've replaced pretty much everytyhing in my old desktops, but lappys are a bit different and totally non-standard.

It's strange actually - it's powering on (to a degree); the LED lights come on and it spins the CD drive, but doesn't go any further. It doesn't even prodsuce BIOS error beeps. The screen doesn't turn on (it's not just a backlight issue). The computer just doesn't boot.

Any ideas?

A lack of BIOS beeps is your first port of call. What's the easiest way to reset bios, nowadays??! Is it enough to pull the battery? ... Do they still have ye-olde batteries??! FFS, I'm SO out of touch with my hardware stuff!!

I tried replacing the battery, but no joy. The new battery might have been dead too though!

Using WiiU to type this. I hope my lappy gets fixed soon!! Guy is coming tomorrow lunchtime.

Easy way to test a CR2032 battery... Shove it into a Dreamcast VMU!!

My Dreamcast is packed away in the loft. I suspect the battery is fine and it's something else.

It'll get sorted - one way or another. I'll buy a new one if necessary. I can't not code!
