Installing MySQL

shroom_monk	Well, I'm trying to get local webhosting to work on my computer, so I can practice PHP and MySQL at home. I've got Apache 1.3.37 working with PHP 5 as a local host. Great! But when I come to install MySQL... tis not working! I'm trying to install MySQL Essentials 5.0.37 for Win32 (MSI). I have a book (PHP and MySQL Visual QuickPro Guide by Larry Ullman) which explains all this at the back. I have followed the books instructions, which are the same as instructions I have found on the internet. From the error message I have been getting, and from what the book says, I think I know what the problem is: the MySQL server isn't starting. The reason (I think): the 'start MySQL as a Windows service' button is disabled, so I can't use it. I've tried and tried and tried, but nothing is worked. Phoenix	I have PHP/MySQL installed locallly on my computer. However, I just installed Developer Side.NET, and it did the work for me.

shroom_monk	Ingenium: Did you go through a stage in the installation/configuration process where you had the option of registering an account on the MySQL website, and/or a stage where you could set the root user password? Evil Roy Ferguso	I think that XAMPP is probably the easiest way of setting up Apache+MySQL+PHP and its friends locally without any hassle - the simplest version just unzips. It's very useful as a development environment.

Yayyak	I got MySQL set up okay, I used the windows installer. It was PHPmyadmin that I had trouble with, I couldn't figure out the options for that.

Yayyak	I got both those options, I set a root password, and I can't remember about the windows service. I've since moved my web testing to a UNIX box.

Yayyak	5.0.24a-win32. There we go. LAMP is just a description of a setup. It doesn't describe how it's installed. Package installers are what you're after. Ironically, there USED to be a really good topic about this back on the old Devcrunch forums. Lol.
