Ordered a new laptop

www.scan.co.uk/products/156-msi-ge63vr-7re-raider-045-120hz-fhd-i7-7700hq-16gb-ddr4-256gb-m2-sata-ssdplus1tb-hdd-6gb-gtx-106

Arriving Wednesday!

My Macbook Pro has done well but I am sick of being stuck on Apples world.

Want windows + visual studio? Have bootcamp... but your $1800 laptop will act like a $500 one
Want Vulkan? Sorry, use Metal
Want OpenGL > 4.1? Sorry, use Metal
Want to udgrade your HDD? Checkout the apple store for our latest range of MBPs.
Want to play games...? Yeah right!

\o/yeay\o/ Scan!
Scan started in my village! Had a little shop, just down the street. Then they grew into what they are now, and obviously had to get out of the village!!!!

Good choice. I got a similar spec GE72VR 7RF Apache Pro. Only has 128GB SSD backed up with a 1TB HDD. But my must-haves were 17" screen at 1920x1080p and GTX1060 GPU. Unity dev was just impossible on my Lenovo Ideapad.

Got it from Laptops Direct - can't remember how much I paid but it was way cheaper than anywhere else.

Yeah, I live in Altrincham and my sister lives in Farnworth so I was *almost* tempted to see if she could pick it up from the shop for me... but I can wait until Wednesday.

Yeah, my must haves were 1060 + CPU. I will probably be doing some unreal 4 and vulkan stuff with it.

I almost sprung for the 17" but... they seem huge!

How has the Apache been doing for you?

I think the only thing I am gonna miss, is going back to barrel plug for power... I really like the magsafe.

It's perfect for what I wanted it for. My desktop PC has 2x27" monitors so that's still a bit of a comedown but it's nice to not have to be stuck in my office to code.

The Apache is a bit heavier than either of my Lenovos - mostly because it has a metal chassis rather than plastic, but now that I'm used to it it's no biggie.

Cool! I didn't realise it had a metal chassis.

One other positive... I won't receive it on Wednesday then have to wait 2-3 weeks before I am allowed to use it

By the way - after my laptop had a minor altercation with the dog, I bought a hard case for it. Did need to slice the foam vertically to get it to fit.

Just goes to show the mark up they have mind... I was shopping once, and spied a Diesel hoodie... £99.99, I who’d and har’d about paying that, but it was a lovely top, just right for spring... Anyway, I left it, just a bit too much... Walked past the shop a couple of days later, 50% sale splattered all over the window.... so I checked, and yep, got the bugger for 50 quid!

I still never felt like it was a deal, because no doubt, they’d have a steady markup on that as well!

Its the oldest trick in the marketing book. You bump the sale price up for a minimum period (I think) of 28 days - nobody in their right mind would buy it at this price. I suppose some do. Then they mark it as 'Sale 50% off', bringing the price back to what it was in the first place - only now they've made it look like you're saving fifty quid.

You've been mugged, but you feel shrewd, and the shop is selling more stock simply because they're having a 'sale' and folk are gulible.

Give it a month, bet you anything jm2bits laptop is back to normal price with a big SALE banner on it, £250 off.

Sometimes you just have to say "sod it", and pay whatever the hell price it is on that day.
Otherwise you're perpetually waiting for "the bargain" and by the time you find the sweet spot, the new iPad's launching 2days after you've ordered one.

So I just checked the same model on Laptops Direct - and its 1800 quid there!

When I bought it on Scan, it was 1299 - and stated RRP was 1550. (Which is the price it has returned to)

Amazon is also about 1600.

So I think I got a semi-decent deal

Yep, brand loyalty is all well and good but it's always good sense to shop around.

The beast is here...

Tried out a couple of games on maximum settings - and it hits 60fps without breaking a sweat..

Now I just need to reinstall windows to remove the ton of crap that it came with (I didn't realise Norton was still a thing.. )
