Budget PC get!

Finally, built the chrimbo PC present for the kids, all the bits arrived, have put em together and... thankfully, they all work this time!

Here's my parts list.

i5 3350 processor (4 cores, 3GHz) - FREE!
Gigabyte Mobo - £50
12GB DDR3 1333Mhz RAM - £30
2Gb GDDR5 HD7870 Graphics Card - £40
2 x Samsung 120Gb SSDs (one of Windows 10, 1 for Steam, etc) - FREE!
1Tb HDD for Data storage - FREE!
Shiny Cheapo Case with some Blue LEDs - £30
500W Bronze Power Supply - £20

Which brings the total cost toooooo....£170

Well, probably more around £180 with a few cables, etc. But yeah, this system beats my ol AMD set-up....

Spent some of the day copying over a bunch of indiebox games that I'd kept over the years onto it, what with the DRM freeness on them, installing a couple of its of softawre that the kids requested. Should all be good!

The mobo arrived with a bios password left on there, crazy things, ended up having to use the CMOS CLR headers on the board to get by it after a failed attempt to reset it by removing the battery.

Will head over the agameaweek site after work tomorrow to install some other goodies for them both

How on earth did you get the processor, HDD and SSDs for free?

Work were throwing out a couple of PC's so I said, hold on, can I have them instead? So, that got the processor and the 2 SSDs, the HDD is an old spare that needs a home, so it found one I guess, Triston likes editing videos so I figured that's give him a lot of space to play with.

Daaamn.

I miss work.
Used to suggest super-tech to my boss, so he'd end up with really cool stuff that I could grab a couple of years later when he inevitably upgraded again!!

The build eventually got all set up and works well, although I had to replace the power supply as the Graphics card required 2 x 6 pin connectors for power, not just the one.

Let the kids have a play around with it last week and they're pretty happy with how it all works, and it plays A hat in time nicely at a stable 60fps which is handy to know.

Letting it install a few other things on there for them both to use, including an ol version of photoshop and flash which i've managed to shonk on there for image editing. Just awaiting for their games to finish downloading now..... might be ready for them by sunday!

I have a bunch of bits left spare now which is frustrating , so I may have to turn them into another computer, just a fairly small one, possibly to sell on the ebays, etc.

Kewly! Well done on getting it all up and running. It's been SO long since I tackled anything like that. I wonder if I still could..?!

It's still just expensive Lego to be honest, the only way you can go wrong is by purchasing the wrong parts
