Where should a blog be placed?

I am more of the belief it should be a separate page/menu selection on a site, but I am seeing more and more people integrating it into the home page?

Thoughts, please?

Depends on the focus of the site really.

For example, If you're building an e-commerce site then it should really be on it's own section.

I am going to have some more questions on web design and will keep them relegated to this thread...

How hard is it to rewrite a widget meant for Wordpress (simple thing that shows a quote of the day) so that it could work on a normal site that the editor allows you to insert some HTML?

This is the widget I want to rewrite:

As always, it depends..
It's not "too" hard to tweak wordpress, but I used to kinda hack the thing to get it to do what I wanted, instead of doing proper plugins and such. Given how often Wordpress updates and breaks my hacks, though, it became unfeasible after a while!
Doing it properly probably isn't all that hard. If you go in learning to do things properly, you'll probably have an easier time of things, rather than hacking your way through like I did.

Honestly, there's probably a bazillion Quote Of The Day plugins out there. Have a hunt for a simple looking one, download it to your desktop, open up the code, and see if you can fathom it out.

Agreed, if you're going the wordpress route then you are generally better off doing things "the wordpress way" just to help prevent issues when it updates itself / requests an update.

Oh yeah, and as for the original question...
AGameAWeek used to be "Blog front and center", until I visited my Neurosurgeon, last year.
He asked about what it was I do, and I talked about AGameAWeek. He visited the site on his phone, and was all "Oh, is that a game", to which I had to say "No, that's just a blog post".. "That one?" No, daily pixelart.. etc, etc..
The usability of Blog-First was 100% adversely impacting his ability to get to the games.

Even with the "Latest Games" section at the top of the site, our years of using spammy advert-riddled news sites has taught us to instinctively scroll past the top lot of bollocks, to get to the content. Except in AGameAWeek's case, that was scrolling past the actual content, because I don't plaster my sites with mindless bollocks.
Hmm..

As such, I decided that day to make AGameAWeek be game-centric, and then you have to navigate to the blog if that's what you're there for.
It was absolutely a decision made upon seeing someone try to figure out the site.
Perhaps, rather than asking us lot who'll "get" how to read the site, you need someone who you can watch actually try to use the site, and take cues from that.

If at any point you find yourself wanting to point out how to use the site, that's something you need to focus on, because you're not stood behind every reader of the site.

(And yes, I'm aware of SoCoder's failings in this matter!!)

SoCoder does a pretty damn good joib for me to be fair

I'm still debating whether to use Wordpress or re-use my old CMS from ...8 years ago to put together a website or end up making something from scratch again, depends on if I need a website or not.

I do not use wordpress, that is why I was wanting to convert something meant for wordpress to use for a normal site. Unfortunately, the quote of the day is specific to what is offered on the site I linked and can't be found elsewhere. And whatever API they use on their site may only work with Wordpress integration.

I can understand them only providing it for wordpress, as even though I think wordpress blows dead bear, it is used everywhere. I got out of web development when everything moved to database driven sites.

I would have thought eiter a database or flatfile solution would be pretty effective to serve up a quote of the day with speed. If you're using PHP you could use something like....

I have always had a blog on a separate page, in the past. Even when I was using pure HTML based sites, and used the Blog thingy that Coffee Cup put out that was flash based and easy to insert into my site.

I am using BandZoogle for my site, as it is something I can work with and also allows me to do everything I need, without having to use and pay for third party services like Patreon, online store, etc.

About the only services I get along with are Bandzoogle or Weebly. Other than that, the only way I can create a site from scratch is use Rocket Cake as my web designer. My days of coding from scratch are gone.

Damn, I miss the old days. Pure HTML, frame based site that easily worked on any resolution. Easy to create, update and blistering fast.

*mumbles* I hate databases.

Been a long time, so I need to ask. Is a Links page done anymore, or is it a rarity?
Tue, 25 Jul 2023, 01:22
cyangames
If you think it's needed for your site then you should add it, they are fairly rare in a lot of site types but that's not to say it's a bad thing.

Ole' Kuron, is indeed feeling old. Even forum settings and configurations have greatly changed even for the same forum software I have used many times in the past.

Yeah, I'm still of the opinion that newer doesn't necessarily equal better.

Me, too. Piss people off on Music sites when discussing gear and I say repeatedly newer is not better. Especially, when it comes to effects pedals and recording gear.
For me, the original Ratt Distortion pedal, original Ibanez TS9 pedal, original Suhr Riot Distortion pedal are the best. Second editions, remakes, or reissues just are not good and in the case of Ratt and the Riot, they mess with the midrange too much.

I am one of the holdouts who does NOT use a computer for any music recording. I will use Reaper for mastering, but I am perfectly capable of mastering with my outboard gear.

Out of curiosity, has anyone here used Unit testing with PHP? I'm pondering if I should use it to really fine tune a websites code. It's already fast enough but could squeeze some more ms out of it perhaps.

Is that a specifically branded method that I don't know of, or is it what I do but haven't ever heard that term for it?
I tend to add little test loops in places to stress test my latest functions.
for ($n=0;$n<10000;$n++) {$a=MyLatestFunction();} echo timeTook;
That kind of thing. Just simple stress tests to see how bad things get. Best to check multiple times, since server fluctuations can be quirky as hell sometimes!

I mentioned WikiWriter. Found it. To see what it is capable of, Alyce made her site with it many years ago, and it looks fine on different sized screens. Great for information-based sites and although this works fine on different sized screens, I am not sure phones really need to be catered to for info heavy sites, and tablets will display most anything a desktop will.

Thanks to the gentle prodding by folks here, Ole' Kuron has deleted his Bandzoogle account and will be staying away from database driven sites.

Looking for a new host (sighs), and will code things myself.

I am sure I will have more questions.

The one host I am looking at only allows WebDAV for uploading things. Something new to me. Ugh.

Aye, I had a bit more of a look into it and I basically do the same thing myself by checking the time at certain points on the script, it's actually just a fancy name for something simple

Kuron is a dumbass. Like legendary dumbass status going on. Normally my hosts provide the SSL certificate automatically. Not my new one. You have to manually configure it. Read how to do that.

Normally changes to my DNS shit propagates within minutes and has for years. Not this time. Hell no. Kept getting errors on setting up my SSL from Let's Encrypt so kept trying. Now have to wait a week until I can try again as I have put through too many requests. Been about six hours and site had not propagated. Yes, I know it can be 48 hours, but hasn't taken that long or even this long in over a decade.

Dumbass!
