New-ish PC bits

Have finally given in to get myself a slightly newer PC, on a bit of a budget but, something I can upgrade over time.

Managed to wangle a B450 motherboard with a low-end athlon 220g processor and 16 gb of 3200 mhz ram for £100 off ebay, will probably add a geforce 1050 card to it over the coming weekend and decide which storage to use, it has a M.2 slot for stuff which is kinda cool!

I'm glad the mobo has 4 slots on it and I should be able to use my existing PSU and case, there's lots of room for upgrades also which is kinda exciting.

Should I go with Windows 10 or Windows 11 though, I'll likely err on the side of caution and probably go for windows 10.

I think I'd prefer to go with Win11. Why go for a new-ish PC if you aren't going to be running the new-ish OS?

I don't think there's any "major" issues with 11, are there? I mean, I've only been using it inside a virtual machine, and even then it's maybe 1 or 2 times a month.. My reliance on Windows is almost non-existent at this point.

But, yeah, they're cramming in adverts and other bullshit, but they've been trying that for decades. The complicated part is how the hell you turn that shit off.

Since you've opted for a "classic" (non-ARM) system, you likely won't be impacted by the myriad of ARM based issues that Win11 is being bogged down with.

Yeah, thinking about it, I've been using Win 11 at work for a good while with no issues so, may as well.

I still have old software running on my win 10 laptop. (which is my main pc, NOW sigh)

i would not want to switch to windows 11 just to see them not working ...

or, the biggest NO for it is to not have a local account ... What If the internet does not work at some time and i want to log into my computer, but can't because the M$ servers are not reachable ?

The another biggest no is that i do not want to set up the widows just like i want it to be(have). And microsoft is known of disturbing the settings with every update or other things.

(now the ranting mode got me ...)

Do you know how many times i have lost data because of the effing updates which forces you to restart the computer automatically ?
Is m$ going to pay for it ?

If i let my pc stay on over night, that does not mean that it is not used ... i listen to some music that requires the PC to be ON. That means that rebooting is unwanted but does m$ understand that ?
I had to use the Group policy to disable the rebooting and i'm still not sure if it works ... (and yes before the Policy settings i had all other setting set to prevent the restart, which, obviously has not worked ...

Latest update caused a blue screen here ... with 10~20 minutes of waiting time until the system could repair itself ...

Ahhh, windows 11 forces an online m$ account now?...hmmmm...maybe dual booting is an option instead?

Had a look online, thinking an RX 570 may well be a better buy as opposed to a 1050 or 1650. double the available VRAM, etc, etc.

The mobo bundle should be arriving today so I'll have some fun putting it all together tonight probably!

Picked up an Rx 570 and a lil sad to play about with oses on for £74 I've borrowed a PSU to get it all working so will spend another £50 on a replacement, total build cost will be roughly £225 then, nice!

I'm going to presume you meant lil ssd, there
£225 for a decently spec'd system is pretty damn good!

Soooo, the motherboard wasn't posting, spinning fans up, anything yesterday, which after a good amount of time debugging, checking front panel connectors, re-seating ram, trying just one stick, using the screwdriver techinique to try and get a response, reseating the CPU, trying another PSU, and clearing the CMOS, nowt.

"Gahhhh, foiled by another electronic purchase on ebay... twice in 2 purchases" I thought, "what the hell"

Last ditch attempt around midnight, try the motherboard in another case. Works straight away. ¯\_(o_o)_/¯

Oh no. An inconsistent bug!! Aargh!!!

Well, not inconsistent, but just...very, very odd. Have ordered myself a new PSU and Case just now which does bring the build cost up to £244, which is still under half what I would have spent otherwise, so long as it all works!

All works pretty well, aside from the Wifi! If I connect it up via my phone then it works, ran TF2 at highest settings, not even a slight issue!

Running Linux Mint for the month, then I'll be bunging WIndows ??? on an M.2 drive afterwards.

You don’t need a MS account to log into Win11, there is a command you can run when installing it which will bypass it.

I've been signing in with my Microsoft account since as long as I can remember.
