Hello World

     All change again, it's #50!
I took a few hours out of my morning to finally build that little converter. I can now write the newsletter in one format, and have it magically remade into two seperate versions. The lovely Web version has all the images and, with any luck, the email edition shouldn't look like it's suddenly broken!

Adsense..
The ads are actually doing surprisingly well for something that's only been there for a week. £4.77 is the week's unexpected total, so I'll be leaving the "unregistered" ads up for another week to see how well they do now that folk are used to them.
I did take the time to minimise their annoyance, though, so it'll be interesting to see how that effects things.
If they're no good, I'll scrap 'em. No point in leaving something there if it's just annoying.

Currently Eating..
Nothing yet. Been up for hours, too! I should probably go get something, soon!

In the Workshop..
It's been a good week, this week! I remembered to do the Workshop!
socoder.net/?topic=1947

In the Shoutbox..
Birthdays, iPhone 4.0, and Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday!

In the Mudchat..
     Pipeline
     Marvel
     Blood Red
     Long Division
     .Net
     and Brand Awareness
Join in, it's occasionally fun!

QOTW

This week I added a whole new entity to the Socoder universe. A QOTW box which is totally anonymous.
I'm not entirely sure how well it'll go down over future weeks, but it's worth a try!

What's the best thing you've ever pirated?

Oldboy, which I bought.

Mass Effect!

Lemmings 2 : Tribes on the Amiga. I later bought the PC version, only to be disappointed by the rubbish soundcard support.

Recently I ended up having to pirate Sibelius in order to finish my music coursework.

Grand Theft Auto San Andreas for PC...I never bought it.

Blitz3d, after buying a boxed version for £100 from Amazon then not being able to run peoples code properly.

The 2D version of James Cameron's Avatar that was released to movie critics weeks before the movie came out, at least $500 of PSP games, and Adobe CS3

tsk tsk.. You bunch of thieves!

     Lessons to be learned.
     1. Piracy is bad.
Because people stole Avatar, James Cameron is nearly bankrupt!

     2. Don't buy stuff from Amazon.
You can't trust them ever since they started that rubbish Marketplace gubbins.
If something has a license, make sure you buy the license from the right person.

     3. Uninteresting moral of the day
Don't steal from other people, unless you're happy to be ripped off yourself.

Head on over to anonymously tell us what the worst song you've heard is.

Bigger Than Windows

Mog's been a very busy mongoose, and his game's gotten really really big. I'm sure he's been trying to shrink it, but at last count his lovely outdoor tree-based super-demo was a whopping 9.9Gb!
     Is that too big?

PHP or ASP?

Steve's getting into WebDev, but silly 13373575 are telling him he should be using ASP.
Because ASP shows gud 1337 541775.
The PHP vs ASP fight starts in this topic!

Denki needs a Refit

Having been listening to silly publishers for years, Denki have had enough. They know what players like, even if the publishers are absolutely determined to have Denki make a generic FPS.
Denki aren't happy, are scrapping the publishers, and going it alone.
     Wish them luck!

iPad Topic

Took us long enough! We've finally got ourself a topic about the bigger iPod!
     Will you be getting one?
     Will it be worth it?
Or would you rather use the 100,000 other bits of tech that's probably sitting in front of you, right now?

Goto Links

QuakeTML (Jayenkai)

Quake 2, entirely coded in HTML5. But is it real? Some folk think it was an April Fool, whereas others apparently have it running.
     Who knows!
socoder.net/?link=22629

Towel Folding Robot (HoboBen)

An amazing robot that can fold a towel within about 16 hours or so.
It's one of those "We've done it, but..." kind of technologies that should probably work a bit better once the tech's up to speed.
socoder.net/?link=22665

Destroy with Just a Hammer (Cower)

A bizarre mismash of song vibes come together to produce a bizarre mismash of song vibes.
I'd follow that up by ranting about the "Youtube used as an MP3 player" thing again, but I think I've done that enough times.

Socoder Games

Nothing new over at Socoder, this week. Awww. Archive time!!

Super Obliteration (CaffeineKid)

Fantastic remake of a great Amiga PD game. I've still got the original on a 3" Floppy Disk, but I no longer have to play it, because Caff remade it so wonderfully. And online highscores, too!

Moshboy's "Missed" Games

Slumlord/Moshboy's collections are fantastic. Picking all those games that passed you by, and shoving them all online with Youtube vids.
     Sorted!

#34 - Stringlink

Nice looking puzzle combo collect-em-up, which plays a little like Snake, but with the ability to smash through your own tail to gain extra points.
You can rotate on the coloured tiles to change your player's colour, and must then smash through alternatively coloured tail pieces to collect the points.

#35 - Red Valkyrie

A nice arena shooter/maze/exploration game. Guide your ship through the large open arena, opening doors, and finding your way to wherever you're meant to be going to.
Ship upgrades can be purchased using any points you've gained per level, so there's plenty to be done, and a whole lot of shooting going on.

#36 - 7th Swarming of the Machines

An unusual platform shooter, where you have to guide the main character to collect all the pieces in the level.
What makes this a more interesting game is that the entire level is made of floating platforms, which sort of bob around in space, and try to squish you.
Grab your Jetpack, and try to survive as best as you can.

Pixel Prospector's Games

Something about Kaizen

Plok Remake

A nice remake of a great platform game, all about flags, and a brilliant theme tune.
Over on the site you can see a wonderful 2 year long development video, showing a multitude of engines, sprite sets and more. Gotta love the Betas!

Pocket Dimensional Clash

Another great little "Every character counts" Beat-em-up featuring more of your favourite characters, this time restyled to look like they'd fit onto a NeoGeo Pocket.
There's some great looking effects, too, so it's all nice and flashy while you're beating the pulp out of other players!
bit.ly/PPGames_PoDiCla

redScratch

Great looking sketch-based fast paced action platformer.
The game has a great looking style, helped by the simple multilayered parallax effect that looks great when combined with the sketchbook style graphics.

Curly Games!

Just one game from CWF, this week, but it's a cracker!

Codename: Gordon

The epic Half Life 2 promo game that seems to have vanished from Steam after the developers filed for bankruptcy. Which is a shame because it's a great game.
Play as Gordon Freeman in a wonderful 2D environment, whacking headcrabs with his trusty crowbar! Go get 'em!

Cower's Section

Javascript Animation Thingy (Cower)

You know Noel's doing complicated stuff when even he resorts to using the word "thingy" to describe what it is he's been doing.
     Could probably use an example!
socoder.net/?snippet=22640

Fisheye (Cower)

More wonderful artwork from Noel, this time replicating a nice big 3D head, with great looking eyes.
Looks nice and Terminator-ish, in a "Big silver skull with Red Eyes" sort of way.
socoder.net/?blogs=22667

Compo Time

DBF Compo

Tomorrow's your last day if you want to enter the DBF Liquid compo. Get 'em in, quick!
bit.ly/DBF_4642

2BeeGames

Things are going slowly over at 2Bees, but they're destined to start a $100,000 compo any time soon. Just not sure when!
