I presume they're doing it this way to help avoid scalpers. It seems stupid that they have to resort to this, but..
.. well, we've seen how that shit goes.

I'm not sure I'd qualify. Though I do pay for the "Online", I tend to just use it to play the old games, and get the expansion goodies.
Also, it's barely been played for the past year or so, except for Mum's Puyo Puyo Tetris sessions!

You can "request an invite" over on the Amazon, though I'm not sure if they're including the Mario Kart bundle there. Also, not sure if it's actually for everyone or just Prime. No idea!

My son who's a big Nintendo fan (a proper one) said this morning he's going to pass on this one. At least for now.

The cost of the console and carts partially, but also that some carts are not going to contain the game but instead activate a download? Is that true?

I haven't specifically read that anywhere, but .. Let's be honest, there's already been a bunch of third-party Switch games that have practically done that already. Wasn't it Spyro Trilogy that only had one of the games on the cart?
It's the way gaming's been headed for a long time.

Interesting to see, though, that the prices that are listed have a nice discount for Digital versions. It's about bloomin' time that started happening.

But.. yeah.. Even those are a hefty hike.
I would hope that those are only the prices for the bigger games. .. I hope.

Meanwhile..

I wrote a waffle about mouses, in this morning's blog.

The Harry Potter game was the same. I've done some digging, there's a key thing. If you see that it means you get a box (and a cart? ) but it's a download.

Possibly be cheaper. Possibly that some games will come in both formats.

I think the most expensive download game I've bought on the Switch comes under £20 and most under £10. I can't see me spending £40, £50 or more on a download.

Interesting about the mouse. I can see a parallel with the DS touchscreen and stylus. We'll likely get a load of poorly thought out experiments using a mouse control with the odd gem as an exception, then it'll calm down and mouse controls will be available when it makes sense.

I don't know how people use a touch pad on a laptop for anything other than gestures. I mean I see people doing it and it's amazing as they move and control it elegantly and precisely but when I do it's like I'm wearing boxing gloves and it all goes to pot resulting in a lot of hand cramp. No matter how much I try it's not for me unfortunately. Mouse on the sofa is fine, in my case. And my laptops have been the 2 in 1's with touch screens and pens which I'm much better with.

Yeah, it becomes second nature after a while. One thing I always do is disable the "touch to tap", because as I scroll around, and constantly lift/drop/lift/drop my finger, it causes all manner of chaos.

Give me a solid "Click", and I'm fine. All my Windows laptops had specific clicky-mouse-buttons for that reason. When switching to the Mac I dreaded losing that, but ..

I definitely shouldn't have.
People have probably said a lot that MacBook trackpads are "something else", but..
.. MacBook trackpads are .. Something else!!

Oddly, I rarely use gestures. The Pinch-Zoom is pretty much it.
*shrugs*

But, yeah, hopefully the "enforced Mouse gimmick" will disappear soon enough, and we'll just get good games.

Pretty cool that the S1 pro controller will work with the S2.

How's the battery holding up? That was a disappointment on my Switch (the original), I remember going to the airport to pick someone up and the battery didn't last the wait I play plugged in these days.

So, roughly 20% for an hour of play would mean around 5 hours of gameplay? Not too horrible.

Can it be used while charging, like if you were on the go and had one of the USB C battery packs made for charging?

Yeah, it's standard USB-C

I'm not a fan of the current direction around the right to brick consoles.
I also don't like that some cartridges will be keycards for an online download.

I've owned the Switch for quite a few years now and never felt the need to pay for an online membership.
You can service them yourself and replace batteries in the console and joycons - carefully.

I will say I'm not a fan of digital games. After losing 30 games forever on the Wii and seeing two Nintendo eShop closings I told myself "Never again".

Only carts with 64 GB of data or less can be fit currently the rest is a piece of plastic with a download later.
This is hilarious when you can get solid state thumb drives and micro SD cards which have much more.
This is incentive for developers to go online only with many games.
Those games in particular get lost with online only stores.

I own several hundred games spanning clear back to the 70s.
I like that I can pull something off the shelf at any time and that won't change.
The real horror that people may want to consider is the fact that consoles are like fancy tablets these days and like your phone's hardware, the parent company can simply "drop support".
Let's face it, you can pay $800 for a Smart TV and after 3 years it can be choked to death with "updates".
This is what I'm predicting with game consoles.
Once the carts are out of the way you're going to upgrade when they want you to. (And it's not an "upgrade" - it's disposal and repurchase)

Just a dollar's worth of thought for what should be my 2 cents.

I'm on the fence about this..
I'd like to say that I'm a bit of a hoarder, and that's all my Amstrad CPC, Amiga, Gameboy, Megadrive, Dreamcast, etc games are all here and accounted for.
... .. and they are.
But I honestly couldn't tell you the last time I dug one out, stuck it in the original system and played it.

Well, yes, I can. I upgraded the Amiga 600 in March 2023, gave it a 1mb chip expansion and a PCMCIA based compact flash drive. Ooh, it had a fun time, and many games were played, before switching over to Blitz 2.0 and attempting to code a few games.
\O/yeay\o/.

But that's about it.
Everything's emulated, up to and including the PS2/Dreamcast/Gamecube era.
I haven't emulated beyond those, yet. My computer setup could happily do it, but I've not yet moved my "emulating recent systems is evil" marker beyond that era

What am I waffling on about!??
Oh yeah, everything since 3DS and Switch has been digital for me. Or maybe before that? When does OUYA come in the timeline..?
My digital collection is probably going to bite me in the arse sooner rather than later. But the way I figure it, by the time something I want to play is no longer playable on the original hardware, then I've probably got alternative options to do so.

Oh, and given the Switch 1 had an 8 year+ lifespan, I don't think Nintendo are aiming to go down the annual upgrade route, any time soon.

That's not to say digital is ideal. My own collection of iOS games are no longer playable because Apple decided I didn't update them often enough. That really bloody well stinks, and means nobody gets to play, not just my games, but thousands of others.

I just think that, as long as Nintendo don't bugger up their network stuff again, we're probably going to be keeping things a little longer, in future.
They've likely learned a lot from having to kill things, enough that.. moving forward.. they likely "shouldn't" do that all too often.

Case in point : SmileBASIC is running on the Switch2, even though it's not 100% compatible, and the CEO of SmileBoom didn't even know it was possible to run it on the Switch2 without needing a devkit. People on Twitter asking why it's popping up and error message and him being baffled! https://x.com/notohoho/status/1930572367635546405
I think that says a lot for Nintendo trying to make things as "available" as they can.
Whether that sticks... ... guess we'll find out.
All I know is, I'm hoarding digitally, now
.. Sony and Microsoft, though...

Digital hoarding is good, IMHO. Granted I lost 98% of my backups going back to '79, but I equally lost 98% of my physical (non digital) belongings.

I prefer digital stuff if it is backed up online, by either myself or the company. That is the only reason I have my Kindle books and Amazon MP3s, and certain games from Steam, etc.
