As a long time RPG fan going back to the original. :)

Feeling Hot

16th June 2025
That's not terrible unless the inside of your house is that hot.
Throw on some shorts. ;)
A swamp cooler and a fan works well if you don't have AC.
We hit over 100 units (F) by late summer. 🧑‍🚒

Rebuilding the Browsercade

16th June 2025
I would think you'd want functions though to help keep things modular with JSE.

Growing a Programming Language From 'Max

15th June 2025
Not ready for prime time.
Get your syrup, there is some waffling but I try to provide a good foundation for various topics.

Learning Java ... I guess

13th June 2025
@kuron It's interesting how we've gone from ''programmer''/''cod er'' to ''developer''
A ''developer'' can be asked to do anything at any time and the domain is unbounded by the employer.
In a sense, they can expec*snip*

Learning Java ... I guess

13th June 2025
The real sad part is like the project above, programmers aren't programming. They're memorizing frameworks at a very small level and writing glue.
Sure, it's been the case since we've had libraries but it's been pushed into configurati*snip*

Learning Java ... I guess ...

13th June 2025
I'm just glad to have a shot at a job. My team got killed during post COVID layoffs.
Never thought I'd be doing Java but you do what you need to survive and stand on your own two feet I guess.
I'm not really scared by the size of Java, a lot *snip*

Back to Game Programming

13th June 2025
Still finding time to work on my shmup with a friend.
I never name things early, it's proven bad luck.
I've got enemy types moving quite nicely now with several abstractions over a generalized Mover type.
Honestly after about 13 years it's f*snip*

Welp finally forced to learn Java with Spring ... sigh.

Anyone try Forth on your retro machines?

12th June 2025
It's interesting in that you get a small ''OS'' a REPL and an editor all in one.
This guy's project is pretty cool!

Poundland Sale

12th June 2025
We have ''Dollar Tree'' where I live. It's sad, the prices start at $1.25 now and go through $10.00.
Most of the folks working there are on hard drugs and can barely operate towards the end of their shift.
My town has fentanyl and meth proble*snip*

Anyone try Forth on your retro machines?

12th June 2025
I keep wanting to make time to learn Forth but damn, where is the time these days!?
Also available on quite a few 8 bits with some swapping the Basic ROM for Forth.
Seems like an excellent fit for the Spectrum. ;)
It's cool that it's interactive*snip*

Supporting Modern File Formats

Hehe ImageMagik has a really bizarre inconsistent nasty interface.
It kind of wants to be a programming language without being a programming language.

Future of Blitz

12th June 2025
Thankfully when the source code is open source you can always check what the maintainers are working on.
That's one of the advantages of everything being on GitHub you can kind of gauge exactly how healthy something is.

I've been a shmup fan for quite a long time - I mostly make games of this genre too!
What would you say sets Platypus apart in the genre (is it more than visuals) ?

Steering Behaviors - Level Up Your Movement

11th June 2025
There have been a lot of tutorials on this but I feel it's something that most game programmers should learn at some point.
Essentially steering behaviors model autonomous agents that have different desires and goals but also have limitations on how *snip*

Future of Blitz

10th June 2025
Hmm I know in BlitzMax I usually just bypass the IDE and use Emacs with some custom Blitz aware package. Mark exposed the compiler so you can call it directly and not have to rely on a specific IDE.

Flavoured Pickles

10th June 2025
I wonder if it was a proper ''Koolickle''?
I accidentally bought some sweet pickles and I usually get kosher dill.
These are awful I don't know how people eat this stuff - very gross flavor with a taste of clove or something...

It would be very poorly implemented if there was no sensitivity setting...
