H~S~R : Horizontal Shooter Redux

Because BlitzMax wasn't all that..

BlitzMax had buffer issues..
Blitz3D doesn't.

So here's Horizontal Shooter redone with B3D!

Hit F2 on the main menu to switch between the 4 available buffer effects.

Oh, and Hit Tab to see the Badges you've got.
(There's 8 to collect!)

Nice one! I didn't hear any sound fx other than the badge unlocked sound though... was that a bug or did you not get round to it? I noticed there were several SFX in the data folder.

ooooh, kay!

Um, yeah there seems to be some kind of issue when ending certain levels, which winds up getting you stuck. I'm looking into that!
Next edition should include the online highscores, but don't look at this as if it's a rushed, unfinished beta of a game, rapidly coded in time for my AGameAWeek Tuesday Deadline.. 'cos that's not what happened, at all!!!
*cough*

From the looks of it, the maths for the particle effects are good.

Nice Job

Jay, this game is beautiful and fun. You should submit an image of the day over at gamedev.net for it. Would give this site some exposure.

Hey, that looks like an awesome game from the video. Design-wise, I see no point in the friendly ships on the left, other than to be targets for the enemies to shoot at. Perhaps you could use them for secondary weapons, or even regular fire from them (though figuring how they fire may be too much).

But even as it is now, looks like a very fun game.

The Cons:

The slow down, even with its most basic visuals, is depressing on my machine. Also, the full screen option causes the game to lock-up every time.
As for game play, I find myself on defense most of all, concentrating on blocking enemy bullets and just firing blindly to the other side. Maybe some kind of special ability would help - say, evasive action where your reserve ships fly off-screen for a few seconds.

The Pros:

It's gorgeous. And even with its minor game play issues I still think there's a great amount of fun to be had, as well as a perfect amount of strategy. For example, it's a good idea to unload everything on the enemies right when their spawning and still in their loose line formation.

In conclusion, good stuff. I'm sitting pretty in the middle of the scoreboard with a good 3000-something.

Slow!!! NOooooo!!!

I can only hope you're using a very obscure system!
It's been happy with all 3 of my testbed systems. From the lowly crappy celeron downstairs, to the annoyingly vista-infected Quad Core upstairs, and even the ATI at work (ATI! How could he!!?)

What system are you using?

-Good Ol' AMD 3700+ CPU
-nVidia GeForce 8600GT
-Two gigs of RAM

There's no way it should be slowing. Maybe some background process is interfering?

Any thoughts on the lock-up when attempting to go to fullscreen?
