Here's a question...

I'm in the middle of testing out windows 10 on my mac mini, which is way more powerful than my poor little laptop.

I have installed Win10 to an external USB hdd and have it booting OK. I have (almost ready, need to deactivate old pc first) A windows 7 key so I can install that then use the free upgrade option. My plan is to install Win7 onto a partition of my main mac drive, upgrade it to win 10, then repartition the drive back to normal and from that point on, boot from the usb drive whenever I want to use windows.

Now the question.
Will booting from an external drive make windows think it's a different machine and invalidate my install, or will I be OK to boot using this method?

From what I've heard, they're being pretty bitchy about Exact Specifications. Even minor tweaks can deactivate your "free" copy, and require you to buy a copy instead.

At your own risk.. .. But rather risky, I'd say.

hmmmm

Looks like I'll keep the small partition on the main drive then. I'm not paying £35+ for a hdd cable to add a second drive internally!

Fun fact, Windows 10 runs smoother on my mac than a fresh install of OSX... Go figure.

Give it time.. I reckon the Win10 will slow to a crawl, whilst MacOS will still be as smooth as it's ever been.
That's been my experience, anyway.

First big complaint!

You can't search properly!!!!!
You search for a folder, windows finds it, you right click and "open in new window".... Does it open that ACTUAL location? Hell no! it opens "Search Results in HardDrive (C\) > Folder Name"

What the hell use is that!!

Hmmm...
Opened laptop from it's regular "I just close the laptop" sleepmode, and for some strange reason, the laptop's "Lenovo Pointing Device" program was no longer running.
It wasn't noticeable until I was trying to scroll around webpages, at which point I was getting more and more frustrated, as things didn't bloody well scroll!!!
Grrr..

No idea why that failed to be running, but.. It didn't do that before this week's big update.
?

Gee, thanks Windows. I really wanted you to unceremoniously reboot WITHOUT EVEN ASKING!!
*sigh*
Might as well go to bed. Getting no coding done, now.. Too pissed off at Windows!

I did the unthinkable yesterday and updated. And... After waiting a fucking age...

Boot time is longer. Shut down is longer. And I get strange "power saving" screen darkening on some websites (despite my power options stating NOT to do this).

Other than that, it's pretty much nigh on identical to 8.xx so far. Which means I still prefer 7.

I think I'm generally lucky when it comes to windows... I never really have any bother, I think the only time was with vista and a winmodem, but that wasn't vistas fault as the modem manufacturer thought it would be a good idea to release a 64bit vista driver before a 32bit one!!! Divvys

Easily sorted though, I just went out and bought a router (which I needed one anyway and it was a perfect excuse to get one at the time)

So yeah, looks like I've got the Midas touch when it comes to windows, cannot say that for anything else though! hehehe

Yeah, all my USB-to-Ethernet dongles seemed to break when moving to .. um.. was it Vista or 7? ... Probably Vista. Vista broke everything!!!

But other than decade old devices, most stuff still works fine

I swear to god, Windows File Search gets fucking dumber with every new version..
Win 2000, I could type a filename into the box, and it'd find it.

Why the hell does that not work anymore, without a 3 hour bloody delay, whilst the system trawls through the entire omniverse on the off chance that the file might not be right there in the folder I started the damn search in!!!

God help you if you need to add a wildcard into the mix.. Better book the week off, first!

|update| -=-=-=- |update|

I opened command prompt, and did a "Dir *findthisfile* /S /B" .. It was monumentally faster!!

Oh gosh, that's what calc looks like in Windows 10...seriously, fuck that!

CONTRAST PLEASE!
---
Also, for popping up a "enjoying this app" request.. inside bloody CALC.exe

The contempt I have for Windows 10 floweth over. Sticking with my "all updates off" version of Windows 7 as long as I damn well can.

You know what I really fucking hate in Windows 10 (other than the plain title bars and blandness of absolutely fucking everything!)? The fact that you can't permanently turn off the touchpad on a laptop. FFS!

I use a wireless mouse and the touchpad just gets in the way and I sometimes brush on it when typing, causing all manner of fuck ups.

I disable it in settings and I can de-activate it if an external mouse is present. Yep that's fine. It turns off. THIS SESSION ONLY. The moment I turn the computer back on it's active again. It's never done that in any other Windows. And it doesn't turn off when a mouse is detected.

SAVE MY FUCKING PREFERENCES YOU FUCKING PIECE OF FUCKING SHIT!! It's not rocket science. It would take a few bytes of data to store that info. It's REALLY not too much to ask.

I know I can delete the driver, but if my mouse fucks up, I want to be abe to go back to the touchpad (temporarily).

Grrrrr!

You could try devcon Rockford matey:-

msdn.microsoft.com/en-gb/library/windows/hardware/ff544707(v=vs.85).aspx

Figure out how to disable the touchpad device using that, then write a batch file that executes on start up... Done!

I have been looking into doing the same with my vista laptop, never got around to it!

I don't want to make it difficult to access (my wife uses the lappy too). Just be able to turn it off (and on again if I want to).

It worked in Windows 7 and 8.xx. Windows 10 fucked it up.

Maybe a .bat on the desktop?
Mon, 11 Jan 2016, 14:11

Yeah, that's possible. Maybe. But it's just as easy to go into settings and disable/enable it.

It still negates the fact that Windows 10 caused this problem.

This morning, my icons have not only changed to a larger version, but the grid has also seemingly upscaled itself, meaning that I have ginormous icons in a ginormous grid.
Annoyingly, if I scale down the icon size, it leave a fucking huge chasm between each bloody icon, which looks absolutely fucking ridiculous.

God only knows why it's done that.
Fucking Windows!!!
