Socoder -> Music -> Bought a midi keyboard for ipad/pc

I bought a midi keyboard for the ipad and the pc. It is a Samson Carbon 49. It has 49 full size keys and gets its power from either the ipad or the usb cord (no adaptor required!)

It is pretty cheap(69 euro) It is almost 90 centimeters wide(big!) Has velocity on the keys and a couple of special buttons for midi commands.

You can put the ipad in the slide/slith on the top but you need a special ipad adaptor(not included)

I tried Sonar X3 and Open Modplug tracker and it works like a charm. It is plug and play and requires no drivers/intallation. Just plug in and select midi in the tool and it works. The usb cable for pc midi is included in the box.

I have been following a couple of piano lessons on youtube and been practising making songs on the keyboard(two handed play) In Open modplug I found a option two split the keyboard for two instruments(low/and high)

The nice thing is that I can now learn how to find the right notes for remaking songs and find the right cords ect. Been playing for hours already.

The special adaptor cord for the ipad is pretty expensive. More then 30 euro's. But once you have it then with things like gadget and im1 it should work straight away.

Currently I am practising the Morrowind theme and Outrun Title tune with 2 hands. I might enter the notes in Gadget when I get good versions going and put it on the cloud.

I read that when connected to the ipad the midi keyboard does not eat a lot of power and you can go on for hours.

If you want a big cheap keyboard then I would say this is a good choice.

I keep looking at such things and wondering if I should.
Thing is, I have a full sized midi keyboard sat in the corner if my room, unused. I attempt to learn every year or so, but find my fingers don't seem to "work" that way..
I guess my fingers are meant for typing, as no matter how I try, no matter how many tutorials I follow, I just can't get to a decent level of play.
Hmmm...

Jay: You should do a video about how you compose your music. Show us mere mortals exactly how you do it.

With the piano lessons on youtube I already learned you should keep your fingers not straight but a little bend. And how to move left and right with the hand(thumb) And how to roll the hand to hit keys in stead of pressing the fingers.

Last time I played the keyboard youtube was not invented yet

edit :

If you do make a video. I noticed that the video's I made get quite a number of hits. Showing how to use a program is populair on youtube

Besides Jay/AL, you don't have to talk; you can just use some annotation...

If I hook the iPad up to the Mac, I can record a direct steam from it.
Youtube
..but I can't actually hear anything whilst it's capturing, so that's not much use..

I'd probably also need a decent mic, and probably a secondary camera.
Hmmm... :/

Oh well. I had hoped that us tuneless types might be able to make something resembling music following a short, but descriptive vid, showing how it's done. What the apps and processes are etc.

Not to worry Jay.

Aaah, if I plug the iPad into the Mac, startup QuickTime and set it recording, it does indeed have a volume slider, to allow me to listen to the audio.
I'm still headphone-less, but it'll have to do!

Since it's recording the iPad's video and audio, though, I don't believe I can add a further mic input into it. Or at least, I don't think the basic "free with the system" version of QuickTime will let me do that.
I'll have to investigate. *shrugs*. I might end up having to record a separate microphone track, then re-render with mixed audio.

In the meantime, I made this as a quick test of things.
It's not perfect, and the only audio is from KORG Gadget, plus there's no annotations without me having to re-render the bloomin' thing.

Additionally, you might notice I slow down quite a lot, at around the point that I'm loading up the Phoenix synth. This is because the Mac started doing some really crazy shit, completely muted all my audio, and I honestly wasn't even sure if it was still recording!!!
Thankfully it seemed to recover, and there are no apparent issues in the video. *phew*

So.. TEST!!

That's really cool - the track and how you put it down.

Nice

I'll have to look in to mic options.
I have a USB mic from RockBand which could possibly do the trick, but I don't think it has a very high pickup volume.

Wondering if setting my iPhone as a camera, and wearing earbuds hooked up to the Mac, might allow me to record myself at the same time as capturing the iPad in the above way. Then I could sync up the two afterwards, and re-render... If not in scary IN-vision, then at least stripped out audio!!
