I have a crazy idea for a project that needs a keyboard, can't get an old xbox chatpad to work with arduino for some reason, I wonder if I got an lcd with touch screen, would it be easy to remove the touch screen and use it by itself with a paper keyboard drawn behind it...

Actually, the idea would be a handheld c64. I'm about 50% sure that a raspberry pi zero would run the emulator no problem, the screen might be tricky to get a constant 50fps, unless I get a really cheap hdmi screen.
I'd prefer a real keyboard, but I can't find a small enough USB keyboard.

As for the keyboard.. Create a cheap membrane and get a C64 Mini, then sit there and cut all the little keys out until you've built a actual physical tiny C64 keyboard!!

Sidenote:
I have got an Wireless Xbox 360 S joypad. I have noticed that it turns itself off after few mins of inactivity - (even if it is used wired (haven't tried it without the battery)) . (pps: have not tried to connect it over bluetooth, or better said - could not connect it/use it in this way)

Well few (maybe all) emulators on the RPI 3 b+ do not like this, and when the xbox pad turns itself off, only exiting the emulator and going back to the emulationstation and back to the emulator makes it work again.

So i have got another xbox wired controller, and sofar it worked ok.

Nope. Not with the 360 chatpad. Problem is that you can't use one with windows (I don't have an xbox 360) so I can't even let it init and check what signals get sent. Not to worry though, it was only 50p, so I'm not out of pocket
I was thinking of building a keyboard from scratch, or maybe even just grab a cheap tiny bluetooth keyboard, only problem there is the key layout.

The Pokemon keyboard isn't actually all that small, though! It's a good sized keyboard, and if you can pick one up cheap, is handy for emergency typing!!

..But I can't get it working with the Switch, which was a bit of a bummer.

The plan is for something handheld, which was why I thought of the chatpad. A DIY usb keyboard should be possible, but I would also need a DIY gamepad of some sort also .

I actually have the Pokemon game and keyboard, but never opened the box.

Got it from Argos for £10.

OK here goes.... Just ordered the 2 cheapest 320x240 screens I could fine that are being sold on this side of the world (for delivery speed reasons, china often takes a little while).
The plan is to use one as my actual screen, the other will be a touch keyboard, using something like this...

for the graphic.

I Think this will be a fun project.

What type of touchscreen are you using - capacitive/resistive?

That touchscreen keyboard won't be usable/accurate at all with capacitive (when I developed for HP they recommended a minimum of 40x40 pixels for touchscreen buttons - much more if possible) and probably not for resistive either - the keys may be too small. You might want/need to enlarge the keyboard and relocate the side function keys.

But hey, I'm really interested in what you can come up with. And as Jay said, "Good luck!"

It'll be limited to only one key at a time, but on a c64 that won't be much of a negative. I'll use sticky shift and any other keys that might need it.

One of the screens has arrived. It's a little smaller than I imagined so I think stuffing this contraption inside a DSlite case might be out of the question, not to worry though, the first round will be mostly a test to see if it's something I can actually do. After which I'll decide if it needs an upgrade.

How small can you get things?!

What if you made a teensy tiny keyboard roughly the size of a GBA cart, and had it slide in and out of the cartridge port of a GBAsp?
Would definitely need a stylus for tapping the tiny keys, though!

OK, latest test has the screen working (touch screen hasn't arrived (yet?)) and a joystick being mapped as numpad keys 2,4,6,8,5. Works well. The only thing is, I'm running out of digital pins. I was thinking I would need to use some sort of resistor ladder and some binary math on an an analog pin, but just now, as I type, I remembered that the megadrive controller cheated to get the extra buttons on a standard 9pin connector.
I will try wiring two joystick ports to the same pins, and switching the GND pin between the two ports when I read. It would need to use up 2 digital pins instead of a single GND pin, but that might be OK.
I just hope there are enough pins left to use the touch screen when (if) it arrives!
