Ooh, that 'older' effect is lovely! Adds some nice texture, and gets a little spooky too if you apply it enough times. Nice one!

I wasn't thinking of metronomes at all when I made yesterday's tower, but now you've mentioned it I can't unsee it!

Day 11: the beginnings of a monorail station! It's not got any supports yet so it's just floating in the air, and the train is placeholder, but all the key shape of it is there.

Plan for tomorrow is to put the finishing touches on it and experiment with if I can make the rail follow an arbitrary bezier curve (which I think is doable in Blender but I've not looked into it yet).

Hmmm...
Been working on Testcard G, today. It's "The complicated one", but I've mostly gotten things working.
Unfortunately, there's a REALLY odd bug happening in Safari (MacOS).
Whenever two white-rectangles overlap, it seems to add a little thin grey border.
It only seems to happen with white-on-white, and it's frustrating the hell out of me.

BAH!!



Try it out, here, and whinge about the lines!

In Chrome on Windows 7 I don't see the extra lines that you see, but there are some weird thin vertical lines inside the white rectangles in the middle of the card. But where they are, how numerous they, and whether they show up at all seems to depend completely on the resolution / zoom level. Weird! I wonder if it could be some kind of weird anti-aliasing thing, perhaps?

Day 12 of the cityscape has the station no longer floating, and a test track with support columns laid out using a bezier curve. Blender's modifiers are really cool, it turns out! I only had to make a single tiny piece of track, a single support column, and draw a bezier curve. Then I could set up a couple of modifiers that duplicated the models along the curve at set intervals and bam, instant track. \o/

I've rejigged the G, and now those pesky extra glitchy lines should (hopefully) be gone.
I hope!!

I was hoping to do something else today, and this has taken all sodding day.
I eventually resorted to drawing another line-box around each of the white rectangles, so mask the glitchy lines.
Also, I think it only showed up in Safari, because.. Why not!!

For Day 13, I started out trying to arrange my existing models into some kind of basic layout, to get an idea for the overall feel of what I've got so far and to see if anything was missing. This very quickly showed up a fairly silly oversight: the path I made on Day 2 only goes in straight lines! While it can be connected vertically using Day 7's elevator tower, it can't go around corners, nor can it be connected at junctions.

So I put the layout on hold and instead put together three new path pieces: a corner, a T-junction, and a crossroads. Here they all are along with the original straight piece from Day 2:

A bit of a lazy day, today, but one that sets up easy tweaking in the future.
I've re-organised the Testcards into an array, as well as playing with CSS and making the buttons a bit more.. .. Button-like!

Today's tweaks.

1. I added a little note for each of the Testcards. Pops up under the selection box.

2. Added a titlebar that pops up when you open the menu, and lets you shift over to the Knitting tool and the Sprite Generator. (Both of which have been Advent creations)

3. .. And then I struggled with Testcard H, because it's all kinda squished up in the top-half of the testcard. It's definitely a testcard that's designed for 4:3 screens, and trying to make it work in anything else makes for a horrifically broken testcard!!

Made a proper start on laying things out for Day 14, although didn't have as much time this evening. My broad approach has been to put together little sections that feel like they make sense, with a view to slowly growing them out and linking them up. So far I've got three such areas, with plans for what else I'll be adding tomorrow.

Another day, another testcard!



This testcard has (according to this page) only been seen onscreen twice, and is an electronically generated testcard.
Since no name has been given, and the BBC don't have a "Testcard I", I've opted to name it Testcard I.. Which might end up causing hundreds of testcard-ophiles to slander me for improper naming, but .. It's alright, right!!?!

Another evening with limited time (hence coming in slightly into the next day here), but I've continued expanding one part of the cityscape a bit for Day 15. It's a little bit orthogonal and path-heavy, but I think that's probably one of the limitations of the overall design I've gone for. Still, the monorail track breaks it up a little bit, and maybe I can add some more buildings / details later that will help too.

And I think a giant monster of any sort is somewhat beyond my current capabilities...

Fleshed out another corner of the layout for Day 16, which included extending the monorail around the city. At this point I think I've done about as much as I can with the pieces I've made so far, but attempting a few days of layout has given me various ideas for new buildings to fill out some of the remaining empty space.

Added Testcard J today, which is incredibly similar to F, except for the outer colour blocks.
Since I was tweaking F's code, though, I took the opportunity to fix up the black stripes that appear in both F and J.

I originally made a few of the inner bars be black inside and white outside, but that was the wrong way round.
The new technique is much more complicated, code wise, but .. Gawd, you can't bloody well tell!!

Aw well, never mind..

For my next building, I've decided the city needs some kind of spaceport type thing. This one'll need a couple of days to figure out all the details I want. Firstly, for Day 17, the overall shape of a main hangar building, and the start of a external landing pad. I'm still figuring out exactly where I want to go with this, but I know these two elements are key to what I vaguely have in mind.

I'd hoped to finish the spaceport today, but haven't quite got there yet. Making connecting bits for paths for the exterior landing pads ended up being way more fiddly and time-consuming than I'd anticipated due to all the variations in how many paths they could receive.

Still, I also made a new staircase path piece, which combined with having added connecting bits and smoothing out the landing pads gives us this layout for Day 18:

Tomorrow I want to copy some of these pads to the other side, add supports so they actually connect to the ground, and see if there's anything else to add to the main hangar to call it done.
