Ok, I accepted the flat. I wil be moving from the 29th this month. The living room is huge. Even enough space for a virtual reality set!

The floor, which needs to be isolated by law, is going to cost a fortune !

I can put a couple of exercise benches in the living room. A power tower and a bench press maybe. There are 3 extra rooms and a kitchen with bar on the edge of the living room.

Coming from a small studio flat this is jawdropping.

What do you mean by "The floor, which needs to be isolated by law"?

Is it a rented accomodation? If so, surely the landlord is responsible for things that are required by law?

Anyway, good luck in your new home

The flat is on the first floor(2nd floor for americans) meaning there has to be a heat/sound isolation layer below the carpeting or vinyl. This isolation can be a cheap thin layer of some kind of material that the floor laying companies also sell. The cheapest isolation layer option I calculated was the same price as the cheapest vinyl.
I think I might cost me up to 3000 euro's which is half of the money I get compensated for, for having to move because of the renovations of my current place.

And it is social housing. Subsidised rent.

Good grief, that's a lot.

But if it's a nice enough place then it's worth it, right?

That's "insulation" not "isolation"

Now it all makes sense!

LO|L.. I totally didn't pick up on that. My mind was stuck on "Sound isolation... yeah, that's a thing.."

I wanted to switch internet providers and called the current old one(xs4all) to cancel it. The guy had the ability to lower their price to match the one I was going to replace them with(tmobile) A slight difference though, but made up with the fact that I can keep my old (20gb)website.

I can keep my current modem and can plan in a appointment with a guy to do the configuration(free)

Monday I wil officially sign the paper that ends me renting my current flat.

I spend the day browsing options on what to do for the floor.

I found this discounter close by that sells carpet tiles at 50 cents per tile. The catch is that it can be any mix of colors. I could order a bunch extra to filter out the weird colors and have the entire flat carpetted for 275(inc delivery) euro's. I have also found a cheap insulation option and I would be done including the carpet tiles for +/-90m2 for around 600 euro's.

In the UK carpet/flooring retailers often have "off-cuts" these are usuaully large pieces of carpet/lino (linoleum) at the end of a roll that they generally sell for much less than the carpet would normally cost. Thing is you have to take the whole thing, which could be significantly more than you need or an odd shape, but could be made to fit. Have you tried asking about those?

With the costs you are talking about, could laminate flooring be an option? It's extremely hard wearing and comes in a range of styles, patterns and colours. It's pretty much £ fo £ here. My whole downstairs has beech laminate, and it looks just as good after 10 years as the day it was put down. Easy to keep clean, warm and spills etc. mean no worries.

I looked at laminate floor youtube video's and it seems to complex for me to try and do that myself. I have not spent long looking for prices, but the cheapest laminate for the entire flat came to around 500. Then I would need the insulation and waterproof sheet also below that.

The carpet tiles seem something I could do myself.

As for off-cuts, I wil do some googling around.

I spent this evening looking for curtains. I think I'm going with these 'plisse' curtains. They have these in a honeycomb version that looses 50% less heat. They are expensive but they also isolate sound, and I am next to a school with screaming kids! Dead easy to install it appears too.

Off-cuts are one of those "physical" dealies. You're unlikely to find them on Google.

I signed the contract. Spent this afternoon finding my large collection of M and XL and XXL sporting bags to put the house thingies in. I had a thing years ago where I would buy a couple every month.

Getting the key in 25 minutes! Need to tell the housing person to fix the front door bell and some other stuff that is wrong/missing.

Today I'm going to move a bunch myself. The movers are going to take a look at the inventory at 12:30 and hopefully set a date for the big stuff.

I spend the day with my mother carying bags of stuff over. I think we did 7 trips down the street. I had bought a small plateaucart and this made it a lot easier.

The mover came by and took a inventory of what I can not do myself. It is not sure they have time this month. Then I would need to find another.

I also bought those cheap hanging lamps and lightbulbs. Those things all together cost a pretty penny. They were installed in no time. I almost got fried with one lamp as the electric scematics in the closet are not correct.

These are a set of pictures. One small bedroom is not in it. And the toilet.

The flat were I'm leaving they mentioned they were going to have one whole block for assisted living(psychiatric) I nocited young people standing in front of my door discussing about how someone was not afraid of anyone etc. They looked kind of serious. Half an hour later the police showed up. Just now half an hour ago they were standing together again with a girl all in tears and panic.
I recognise this group behaviour as I have lived in such a 'living group' The adults that guide the young people are usually friendly but can be very mean and cruel. I try to mention this to politicians when I can. I think as back then and now a number of the young people are put on the street and become homeless for breaking houserules.

The police was at the flat quite frequently over the years that I was there.

Tomorrow there wil be Internet!

I just ordered the carpet tiles and the insulation. The floor insulation wil take 6 weeks to be delivered(but was the cheapest!) The tiles can be here this week.

Having it layed by pro's might have cost me up to 3000 euro's. Shopping around and doing it myself wil now cost me +/- 600 Euro's. Some more financial room for insulating curtians.
