Energy situation

The price has increase 30% for gas today. I noticed a woman from over here posting her new suggested monthly payment on twitter. She was at 200 a month. The new suggestion was 1700 a month.

I checked my moms contract. She went into a new 3 year contract about half a year before the crisis started. She is good until the end of next year. She would be in big trouble as her pets need at least a 16.5 celcius temperature. Her home is not that wel insulated too.

Myself, I moved to a very good insulated home and I cook for my mother so eat there too. I'm not planning on buying any gaming power rig until the situation has resolved.

The news mentioned people are going to die in the winter.

I use proton for email, and am wondering if they will have to worry about energy issues?

The bad thing about the cold is although with modern winter clothing and gear you can keep warm with no heat, and stay in a sleeping bag all day. What will still get you is breathing the cold air.

From what I understand. Energy companies and countries need a couple of years to reorganize the supply and demand. Than it is bussines as usual.

Had I been able to stay in Tennessee and keep the house, I would have been fine. Different situation here, but this is my life now and loving life again.

Staying positive and optimistic is a good thing.

FWIW, nothing but love for all here, and I pray for the gang here daily. Due to circumstances in life over the past year, the closest thing to friends I have in this world are the folks here.

We will all get through what is coming, one way or another. We simply have no choice.

Is this thread ok? I have been worrying about the energy a bit lately. I'm not going to use the gaming laptop anymore for a while. I have been cooking food on the lowest possible settings too.

A 11 watt cable modem was said to use 150 euro's of energy a year with the current prices. I checked my laptop and speakers in my home. They use 25 watts when playing music.

Am on the hunt for a raspberyr pi 4 currently to help reduce the bills a bit more, the pi 2 zero w is fine for retro gaming but not great for stuff like youtube, netflix, etc. Ideally a 4gb or 8gb model and that could become my general use puter in the living room when I'm not devving. The PS4 uses 70-75W according to some thread somewhere on the internet so, reducing that to 1-5W seems like a plan for when I don't have the kids about.

Although I do still like playing some GT:Sport every now and then

Yeah, the PS4's a right hog. That and our TV, too. You can clearly see on our smart meter stats when the TV gets turned on for The Chase, and then Mum watches all the news and 17 hours of soaps, before ending the night with a game of Tetris on the PS4.
It's completely flat up until about 4, then slowly crawls upwards until she switches everything off at the end of the day.

Shocking..

Though the oven being on and cooking the night's tea is FAR worse than what the TV does.

We need replicators that can instantly materialise a nice warm meal in seconds.

Eeep, I think I'll keep with the batch cooking then, that's probably what's helping me out with things over here a bit then. Thanks for sharing the smart meter stats, I don't have any data like that but I don't have a smart meter so it's appreciated.

I noticed that setting the screen brightness has a big effect on the energy use of a device. I also found a button that turns the regular tv into sleep mode while the audio keeps playing. This for youtube and radio.

In the lost thread I had talked about Octopus's forecaster tool for energy prices in the UK. It's pretty neat in terms of framing the facts. The actual data is scarry as #### but the tool itself is good as it lets you see your forecasted balance month-on-month using how much you pay and what it thinks your energy usage will be based on your history in previous years. It can show the data with the current tariffs and also with the predicted cap increases.

That and with Octopus, each time I give a meter reading (I'm not on smart meters) I get a new bill. I can submit a reading every day if I want to and know how much it is costing. I've been keeping on top of this and trying to give a weekly reading - in August energy has been costing me roughly £25 a week.

Right now I can afford it, not happy but it's managable. After October's increases it's going to get tough and the predictions for my January bill reach four figures just for that one month alone. Without getting into the taboo, let's hope some sanity returns to the UK energy market soon because £250 a week at its peak is unimaginable.

The Asda store near me is looking like the Soviet Union, hardly bugger all on the shelves.

Martin Lewis has posted an approximation tool, updated with the latest info.
Linkage

Suggests ours is going up by about 27%, which is a much better number.

28% more here. That amounts to £900 more per year than pre October. 2 1/2 + more per month than what I was paying in Jan.

However, better news is the £400 off, so £500 more per year with that adjustment.

The confusing thing is the site says only fixed to Jan. I thought they were fixing for 2 years which is why our kids (and us while we're still around) are going to pay for it for 20+ years to come ... anyone know?

I've just been informed that instead of being in credit by a safe amount that I'm now in debt by £3,000 within the space of 12 days of my last statement. I'm assuming it's a glitch on their side or an old, incorrect meter reading which has thrown things out, still a tad worrying though.
