Drama in the AppStore realms, again.
Basic gist of the story...

Guy makes game, game plods along, sudden interest in game skyrockets it to the top of the AppStore charts, guy pulls game, guy gets death threats..

Over the past few days, lots of comparisons have been made between "tap to flap" of FlappyBird and "hold to move" of SpikeDislike.
People seem, in general, to be confused as to why Flappy's taken off, whilst Spike hasn't.
I've been getting emails about it, and have spent the past day or so answering a bunch of them (had about 7 or 8, although a few from the same guy) along with the odd twitter comment and even a fairly lengthy twitter-private-message exchange. (Which left a mountain of bloody "you have a private message" crap in my email!!! I HATE that!!!!)

In general, my response has been "of course I'm super jealous, but I'm ok with it" and people seem to be moving on. I think they're expecting me to shout and rant and rave like I normally do about things, just so they can make a big story out of it for their blogs!! Sorry, this is just a case of "game does well", and I've already seen enough of those in the years since doing iOS games.

Last night I gave up replying the same crap in every email, and simply wrote a blog post about it. You can read that here.

I don't blame the guy for his success. Fair play to him. He made a game, and people clung to it. That's all part of the luck of AppStore. Some things just take off like that.

It's part two, where he removed it, then got death threats, where it all gets much more worrying!!!

Did he pull the game to sell it retail due to its popularity?

The game exploded overnight, and there were lots of comments about the graphics being sprite-ripped from Mario, and how he must've used some sort of pay-for advertising thing to get his game that much popularity.
I don't think that's the case.. I think the game just "happened"... That kind of thing does happen.. A lot!!

But all the accusations and over-hype got to him, and he got sick of death of being hassled night and day, so he decided to take the game down.. It was all too much for him.

... That's when the death threats started.
"You take my favourite game down, and I'll come after you and your family" and crap like that.

Seriously fucked up shit..

He could easily just sell the rights onto someone else, that would cause the death threats to follow in that direction.

I personally think SpikeDislike and Hoppy Bobby knock the sox off of Flappy Bird, I just can't see how it got so much limelight.

Unconfirmed reports that Mr Flappy Bird has committed suicide. (Most likely false!!)

My guess, he got angry messages from Nintendo for stealing their gfx and sfx. People aren't usually happy with copyright infringers who make ~$50,000 a day by using said recourses.

Now that you mentioned Nintendo, I can see that the pipes are very similar to a certain game made by them.

I hope the man just changes the graphics and re posts the game. He must have had the play-ability right for many people to notice the thing at all unless the graphics were the main attraction.

Helen/Dizi asked me, "Would you take a game down that was making thousands per day just because people kept bugging you about it?"

Me : "Nope. I would however take it down if Nintendo bugged me about it."

Many people are starting to put two and two together...

Two and two doesn't always make 4.

According to a few reports, yesterday, Nintendo have categorically denied that they had anything to do with the takedown. Linkage

People tend to cope with things in different ways.

You're right there, 2 and 2 make 22, 2 plus 2 make 4.

I know there's not many OUYA owners on here, but I'm currently working on an unofficial remake/clone of Flappy Bird exclusively for the OUYA.

The game is near complete, but lacks a couple of things. I intend to add different (and original) themes to the game at some point.

I would take the android version route and use non-nintendo gfx. Just in case.

I'm not putting it on the OUYA via the store, so I don't really care about ripped graphics/sfx etc. I do plan to add new and original themes at some point.

Besides, the original Flappy Bird wasn't removed because of Nintendo and the graphics, while looking very like Mario's aren't actually ripped from any Nintendo game.
