Socoder -> Off Topic -> Jay's New Sony DSC-HX90

You might've noticed this thread slowing down in recent months.
Gone are the days of monthly Star Trek Starship shots and even this month's Arcade Block is missing it's lovely 42Mp shots.

The camera still "kinda" works, and the phone still "kinda" works, but it's not what it once was.
The Windows Phone OS is the cause of most of the issues, but even the photos themselves are starting to look weirdly grainy..

This month's Arcade block arrived, and I'd frankly had enough.
A large calendar-based reminder was taking up about 60% of the screen, and the phone was doing it's impersonation of a device that doesn't have a touchscreen, meaning there was no way to dismiss the calendar reminder.
I had to hardware reset the phone yet again, just to take a fucking photo.

I've long since fallen out with it, and it's pretty much been abandoned as a camera, which is a shame, because it's a shit phone that I only kept around because of its camera...

Tonight, I sat and wondered where to go next.
The Internet at large seems to agree that iPhone 6S Plus is the bestest smartphone camera, but I'm not happy spending that much on a phone, and I'm not comfortable having one so blooming big.

Instead, I sat looking through actual camera cameras.
I'm not comfortable with a great big lumbering camera'y camera, so have been looking through compact ones.
The one that I've chosen is the Sony DSCHX90.
It"s a teensy bit pricey at £300, but I figured Xmas is over, so all the big important spending is done.. Time to treat myself.. ..

Specs
Optical image stabilisation.. This was one of my primary requirements. My hands are very shaky!!

30x optical zoom, Lumia had about 4, I think.

Macro focal length of about 3cm.. Lumia was about 15!!
(As in, you can hold the camera 3cm from an object, and it'll focus on it.)

Battery life "about 360 shots", which doesn't sound right given it has a whopping screen to powerup.. !!

...However, the megapixels are dropping from 42 to only 18
I hope the larger optics make up for such a huge difference.

Image analysis

The camera should be arriving on Wednesday, but Amazon deliveries don't usually turn up until about 4pm, so I probably won't be posting much until Thursday...

Hopefully it'll be nice enough for future shots of starships, and Molly!!

I hate waiting for things...
Can't get any coding done. I'm SO impatient!!!

Amazon deliveries don't normally show up until about 4pm.
.. This will be one heck of a wasted day!!!

That Zoom would be able to answer the question if ants have nuts

I do not go out much so I do not need a camera. Would if there were more flying saucer reports around here though.

There used to be plenty of flying saucers when I was still with the ex; also plenty of flying cups, plates and the occasional flying broom.

I remember the Phoenix, but not the Xindi ship, even though I only watched (a bit of) an episode of Enterprise yesterday where Trip took a Xindi ship for a swim...

Nice photos though.
