Sysinternals BgInfo

It automatically displays relevant information about a Windows computer on the desktop's background

https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb897557
It automatically displays relevant information about a Windows computer on the desktop's background, such as the computer name, IP address, service pack version, and more. You can edit any field as well as the font and background colors, and can place it in your startup folder so that it runs every boot, or even configure it to display as the background for the logon screen.

Because BGInfo simply writes a new desktop bitmap and exits, you don't have to worry about it consuming system resources or interfering with other applications.

it's cool but a lot of it's just redundant-- Do you really need to know what processor you have? or how much memory? rather what OS you have installed? can't you just use a fraction of your brain?

Indeed; but seeing as it only creates a new background image, the functionality is "free" in terms of resources.

It's certainly useful in that e.g. when backing the family's photos across the LAN I can now just get them to read the hostname/IP off the desktop rather than ask them to do anything with the command line. I can only imagine how very useful it would be with a larger network of computers.

Also, e-peen.
