Socoder -> Off Topic -> New Year, New Features!!

It's time to get fiddling with the site again, start of a third year, we should be building up and getting bigger.
When I started doing my DSBrew site (still WIP!) I realised how much of a mess the innards of Socoder really are, so a while back I started cutting huge chunks out, and sticking them into all sorts of different include files. I don't think I broke anything along the way
But those are all background things.

As before I'm not really sure if there's anything more useful that I could add to the site, but if there's anything fun you'd like to see added, let me know here, and I'll see what I can do.

Spinal's suggestion of Private Topics / Forum Sections is being looked into, but I'm trying to do it without using up too much CPU power.. so.. might be tricky. I'm probably overthinking it, though, I usually do!

Could you add some more stuff to the Mudchat, or maybe at least a way of navigating better. Even simple graphics would be awesome...

Maybe a way to create a room that you go into, and then control who is allowed in, and when you leave, the room disappears

I think the main page should be updated to automatically reflect thenumber of users in the mud chat when you join said chat. I also think we should have our own mmorpg section to post all mmorpg questions, so that we dont have to post database and site design questions in the web dev section,
Language questions in whatever designated language section, design questions in the design section, and script questions in the off topic section! I think that would really help to attract mmorpg developers.

Oh and when i think about it, you could just call it the 'mmo section' or something so that mmorts and MMOFPS developers also could post their questions there. And if you're looking for a mod for this section, with experience in network programming, i hereby volunteer! Oh and i've said before that we could also need an assembly section for assembly developers. And i would also like to be able to change text and background color for the mud chat, kind of like on msn messenger.

The Mudchat color scheme is permanent. It's bad enough not being able to use the color BBCode on most of the site, due to the variety of themes..
The mudchat stays in the same color scheme over all themes so that I can be absolutely sure of what the text will look like once it gets to the other side.

And I don't think we need a MMORPG section, or an Assembly one for that matter. If anyone else would like to argue the case for either MMORPG or Assembly, then go ahead.

Could I at least be so bold as to ask for a compromise in the form of a network-programming section then, so that we don't have topics like this one, this one, this one and this one popping up all over the site in various sections?

Edit: Yes you could argue that spinal's thread isn't strictly a programming thread, but what if someone wanted to host an MMO server in spinal's situation? Or any kind of server, really? Bottom line; We need a networking section.

We have a section titled "Blitz"
It's for Blitz in general.

I could split that up into several sections if you'd like..

A network section, a 2D graphics section, a 3D graphics section, an audio section, a maths section and a string section.

Or, considering we've only had 858 topics in the past 3 years, we could deal with it, and clump it all into the section of the language in question.

If anything, we do need a misc "No-particular language" section for posting concepts or coding methods, but without sticking to a particular language. That'd be good for asking concepts and designs related questions about how to make your mmorpg that much better, or discussing concepts and designs that would help to enhance the way your network code would run.
That type of section would come in handy.

Hm, ok, sounds like a plan, I guess. Though I will not bail on the fact that it's unfair that Assembly does not have it's own section when there's sections for so many other languages.

Oh and we could also need a sticky function for useful threads, so we don't have to search for old ones!

How about, for anything that doesn't quite fit, an Off-Topic-But-Not-Really section. For the things that have to do with technology and programming, etc, that would otherwise end up in Off Topic when they're not really that off-topicy.

I'm sure someone has a better name!

On Topic now exists.
Date of Birth is finally up and running! Set it in your Profile.

However, Ages will not show up on the forum. They tend to bring about stereotypes that really shouldn't exist. You see an older age, you assume a better coder. That's not always the case.

If you're interested, click into the person's profile, and you can see it there.

I think I'm going to work on integrating profiles even closer into the blog section, next, since the profile page is currently one mess, and the blog another!!

|edit| Actually, the blog's not too bad, so I just dumped Name and Age on the right, under the avatars. But only if the viewer is logged in, because HoboBen doesn't want his DOB to be known by Google! |edit|

So is everyone listed as being 38 then?

I was looking at the name topic, and it game me an idea:

Can we have 'hidden' topics that are only viewable when you log in, either that we can set a setting when making a topic (though probably not a good idea) or an option so an admin (Jay) can set a topic to be hidden - stops problems with names being posted and then indexed...

Yep.. Apparently so!
I'll tweak it after my tea!

The hidden topic thing is being worked on, to try and do it without killing CPULoad!

Is the bar for On Topic (that thing on the forum list and at the top of this page) just for your theme Jay? Only, it really doesn't look right with the other bars in this theme...

I haven't bothered to go through every theme, and redo it for each, just yet. I'm being lazy
