Socoder -> Off Topic -> good batch renamer?

Here's an odd problem, I need to ftp a whole pile of files to my xbox, however about 100 or so of them have super long filenames. The xbox does not like filenames to be longer than 32 chars, so can anyone recommend a good renamer that can tak all of these files and turn them into short filenames, perhaps using just the first 20 chars or something like that?

For most cases, I use DMexBar

For more precise renaming, I used to use a program called Renamer. Unforunately There's 7,000 other programs out there called Renamer, and I can't find the bloody thing.
If you do find it, you'll know it. It's got a slightly pastel colored interface, and does a whole bunch of stuff!!

I would highly recommend the Multiple File Rename Utility. Check it out!

I have gone with jay's suggestion, it sits nicely in the toolbar and allows renaming based on the original name, so I can have the first X letters plus the extension.

But it does not seem to have fixed my copying problem. Perhaps the filenames were not the full story.

Just incase people didn't notice, you do know the Multiple File Rename Utility is actually in the SoCoder showcases?

Yes, but your util only renames things to "String"+Number, whereas Spinal wanted something that would strip away part of the filename..

assuming it's a TV Series, he'd have..
"The show we're on about - S01EXX - Title.avi"
He wanted to strip out the first useless chunk, and leave the actual name of the episodes intact.
