Socoder -> Off Topic -> The Great Games Experiment

Right, with this Copy Protection thread popping up (here), I thought maybe it would be a neat idea to compare how many games we have, which ones we downloaded and which ones we bought legally, to see if pirates really do buy more games than other people

Here's my list (from off the top of my head):

- Max Payne, Max Payne 2: Bought both legally, but downloaded Max Payne 1 first

- Red Alert 2, Command and Conquer 3: Downloaded Red Alert 2, but bought it when it was really, really old. Bought C&C3 legally, and was actually quite pleased with how it turned out. Probably wouldn't have bought it if my brother hadn't downloaded it first and let me watch as he played it.

- The Sims, The Sims 2: Downloaded The Sims (the original), but subsequently ended up buying all the expansionpacks legally. Downloaded The Sims 2, but never quite played it as much as The Sims. Never the less, I ended up buying The Sims 2 together with my sister.

- Noone Lives Forever, Noone Lives Forever 2: Downloaded NOLF1, liked it, and got the legal version from some graphics card that my dad bought for his machine. Bought NOLF2 legally.

- WoW, WoW TBC: Bought both legally, keep playing on legal servers.

- Black and White: Downloaded the first one, ended up buying it some years later. Also bought Black and White 2.

- GTA2, GTA3, GTA Vice, GTA San Andreas: Bought GTA2 for my then new computer when I was very little. Still have the original packaging laying around somewhere in my house. <3 I got GTA3 on a burned CD from my friend because my parents wouldn't let me buy it, and subsequently ended up buying it some years later. Never bought Vice, but downloaded it. Downloaded San Andreas, and bought it.

- Fifa 06: Downloaded, bought.

- Warcraft 3: Got it as a Christmas present from my mom.

- Sim City 2000, Sim City 3000, Sim City 4: Bought Sim City 2000, played with a cracked version of Sim City 3k for a while if I remember correctly, but ended up buying the extended edition of it that included house editors and the like. Got Sim City 4 for my birthday, and got it's expansionpack for my birthday. To this day, Sim City 3k is my favourite Sim City game.

- Doom 3: Downloaded, bought it.

- Farcry: Bought it.

- Sim City Societies: Downloaded it and hardly ever played it. I thought it would rock, but it sucked. Hard.

- The Legend of Narnia: Got it as a Christmas present, hardly ever played it.

- The Simpsons Game, Loco Roco (PSP): Bought them.
- GTA Vice, The Sims 2 (PSP): Got cracked versions from my brother's PSP.

- (New) Super Mario Bros (Nintendo DS): Bought it.

- Lord of the Rings Online: Bought it.

- Guild Wars, Nightfall: Bought it, didn't play it very much.

- Donald Duck 3D (Ubisoft): Got a demo from a Norwegian Donald Duck magazine, ended up buying it some years later.

- HL2: Downloaded it, and played it about halfways through (might have been less, never been a big fan of FPSs). Currently concidering buying The Orange Box through Steam.

- Rollercoaster Tycoon + Expansion: Bought.

- Theme Park (some kind of rerelease by EA, in 3D): Bought it, and actually liked it fairly well.

- Theme Hospital: Bought it. Don't know where the original CD is anymore. :\

Tomb Raider: Got it from my dad.

I probably have/have had more, but those were all I could find and remember.

Now post your list of games, write anecdotes, and whether you bought or downloaded them. Also post your count. After counting, my list ends up at no less than 45 games, including expansions and console games.

Edit: Also bought Half Life, to be able to play CS online, but never played it much. I never really liked CS. So my count ends up at 46.

(In b4 locked thread!)

I've never torrented a game from this side of the millennium (and only then where it's was game I have on floppy that's become unreadable), but I'm not sure if that's a moral thing or because I've just had no need to. There are some things that I considered buying recently, but after downloading the demos I realised that a *lot* of modern games completely suck.

Usually I'll shell out a whole two quid on something in the "preowned bucket", and that will last me a few months.

My friend bought me HL2 as thanks for some coding work, and I bought HL2: Episode One myself. I hadn't bought anything before that for at least tree years, so that's about it!

I guess my count is two games!

|edit| Best old games ever though: Commander Keen, SinkSub, Castle of the Winds, Civilization, Catacomb Abyss, Might and Magic VI, Raptor: Call of the Shadows |edit|

The only game I've bought recently was Command and Conquer 3. It was well worth it.

The last PC game I store-bought was Half Life 2, since then I've grabbed a few from Steam, but in honesty, PC gamings gone down the crapper..
I buy all my Consoles games, because they're worth it.

This is an extremely dodgy thread.

I haven't played any big game for a very long time, actually. When I did play games though, I bought them.

Game programming got me out of gaming -- ironic, isn't it?

i only play demos, only once buy a small games.
I don't like to buy big games, even downloading the demo.

Absolutely! Stick with the homebrew! Small neat and tidy games that don't fill your registry/hard drive with garbage..

I get all my games legally, although to be fair, I don't have a lot of games. I either bought them, got given them as presents, or downloaded them if they were free games (like the ones on here).

Most of my games are bought. Sometimes I'll download one, but more likely to download a film instead. However if I like it (films included) then I will buy it. Typically with films it's also titles which aren't released or available for purchase (like Festen and lots of anime titles). Plus I try to buy exceptional games that I've say borrowed in the past, like Starcraft and Deus Ex.

Dodgy thread or not, i think it speaks for it self. Maybe pc gaming is going downhill, but if we're to believe this thread, its not cos of piracy!

I don't think we're the norm, though. We're game makers, more than we are game players..

I will admit, I have downloaded more games than bought. There are a few that I have downloaded and bought because the were exceptional. Like unreal tournament. I downloaded 2003 until I could afford it. If I spent hours upon hours of time playing it I eventually bought it. Now some of those games that I didnt buy I did like, just didnt spend a lot of time and eventually removed them and never played them again. Now movies I buy more often than games. But I do download them until they are released and then I buy them. I am not gonna list all my games and movies....as its a quite a bit.

Now I also have downloaded games and movies that I do own but are not playable because of scratches or such. I keep my originals even if they are scratched as proof in case if the police decide to pop up on my door step one day! LOL.

So theres my story. And this isnt really a dodgey subject. It is my opinion that people who have things to hide, are afraid to talk about such subjects. Not necessarily saying YOU JAY are hiding something (or anybody else for that matter), but most people are like that. Most people with skeletons in their closet avoid talking about similar subjects.

I haven't bought a single pc game for over a year, even before then I bought only a handful in my whole history of owning a pc.

I don't download illegal pc games either - I'm a remaker and tend to download only free homebrew, remakes and retro styled games.

I'm a console gamer at heart, so I only really buy console and handheld games. And I've got hundreds and hundreds of those, for lots of different systems.

I don;t tend to enjoyt the agony that goes hand in hand with pc gaming, with regards to installing, graphics cards conflicts and long load times between going through one room and into another - something that most console games don't do/suffer from.

Pc gaming is going downhill but isn't going to crash and burn. I am a believer that people buy what they like and the prominent game-makers will do what they can to stay prominent. But it will go thru house cleaning what with the copy cat clones, and crappy games in discount bins.

In the US, the beginning of 2007 saw an increase in PC sales of around 48% when compared to 2006. Approximately $1 billion is spent on PC games each year in the states, which has also gone up every year over the last 3 years. WoW along has over 8 million subscribers.

PC gaming might not be anywhere near as big as console gaming, but it's still a highly successful, large and growing games market. I'd also expect production costs for the PC to be lower then for consoles.

I believe most of those games in discount bins are from publishers pumping out too much crap. I think in the end it'll be more like a "house cleaning" as opposed to a total crash. It'll probably return to people publishing quality products in the end.

The music industry is probably a good comparison. It's overrun with artists and music yet it sustains itself. The publishers pick their favorites and the rest live in obscurity with little or no mention. Probably no different with games.

When I do download games I use them for the duration of the timed period.
There are times that I wished I could have circumvented the protection, like on the new monopoly game, since other events that include fiddling with the clock, prevented me from enjoying the complete alloted time.

We have to remember that these are illegal practices and although we aren't going to squeal on each other (hopefully), this is the World Wide Web and authorities technically have access to this information.

When this topic first appeared, the main thing I worried about was someone saying "I have a pirated copy of Blitz".
Had that happened, the whole thread would've changed in attitude.
That hasn't happened.
I'm frankly surprised!

But it is a rather two faced attitude to have.

Still, this has been here long enough, and I guess it's done what it set out for.

I'll lock it.
Not because "THIS SHOULD BE LOCKED!!! ARRGGH!!!", but instead just to stop it popping up every few days!

All ye pirates, be gone!!!
