Socoder -> Question of the Day -> QOTD : Enhance 'Monopoly'

The classic game of making folk bankrupt.

Personally, I think what they did with Monopoly Tycoon was fantastic, but it also took away from the Board Game element a little too much.

QOTD : What would you do to make Monopoly better?

Some sort of investment opportunity (buying bonds or whatever)? A way of getting a return on surplus cash or something... Could be interesting, but I imagine it would require some in depth thinking to implement it in a way which adds to the gameplay without being pointless or taking away from the classic structure too much.

Can you do all the off-board ad-hoc trading in the virtual version of Monopoly? If not, then I think it's essential that you could make deals about anything at anytime with other players.

For the boardgame, I don't think I would change anything. It's both simple yet open at the same time. I wouldn't even change the look and design of it.

Afro, now _that_ would be interesting. Perhaps you could set that up pretty easy, though. All players would take turns based on time, so they don't have to wait on other players. You start with 1 property, and have to go purchase other properties by travel, having to stop on different places to pay people rent.

This could work!

Blow up boardwalk and parkplace..

Also, some magnets or sticky feet to keep people from rage-flipping the board. Insta-improvement. Also an addition to the rules that if you catch the banker cheating, you're allowed to murder them without any ramifications.

I thought it was a part of the rules that you can steal from the bank.

I think that if the game veers away too much from its simplicity, then it might lose what makes it fun to begin with. It's easy to make it more complex, but how fun would it be if there were taxes, inflation, investments and interests? That's only confusing.

One specific problem I've found with Monopoly, which I think could be removed without killing off the game's classic format, is the time. A game of Monopoly usually takes hours to finish, causing matches to rarely finish at all. That's my main gripe with the game.

Read the box, man, read the box!!

Every monopoly game I've bought in the past 15 years or so, has come with a "Quick Mode" set of rules.
They usually suggest setting yourself a number of turns to limit the game, best man wins, that kind of thing.

In my experience, though, it's all the idiots trying to count all their 1's that slows the game down

The way we play it, anyone can make any kind of deal with anyone at any time, join forces (trusts!), etc. Makes people angry, and makes the game more fun.

The $40 fee for buying the game is too much.

Yes, that's too much.

It is clever though. The tokens animate themselves around the board. The car makes a driving sound, and the others make respect sounds.

The cash is animated and floats across the board both to and from your account. There is an auctioneer that actually barks the auction, and mediates it, and more.
