It's been a couple of weeks since I changed the WW.
It was about 4 weeks since the one before that.
I think it's time to pull the plug on the site's origins.

NOOOOOoooooo!!!!!!!

So, assuming it does go, what goes there instead?

Thoughts?

Go nuts, let's have a free-for-all!

|edit| As a temporary measure, I've unimaginatively dumped the QOTW there |edit|
|edit| Just a thought, best not leave that there.. I can imagine people answering in the shoutbox, or sending obscure shoutboxy things to my QOTW output file!!![/dit]

Make WW just 'Show 'n Tell' - just show what you're working on and blurb about it? which that's what the sites for every day, but might could be tweaked or something.

We actually did about a year's worth of Monthly-Workshop, but that gained even less interest that the Weekly one!

I have to say.. as soon as I finish a game I'd post it anyway, but I seem to have a game developer's block

I second this, I think it's an excellent idea.

But it must be implemented as a new thread each week, as otherwise people will post in the first thread for a few days and then that'll be it.

I just don't think people have time to burn with the WW. It's a cool idea, but building tons of little games every week gets boring.

It was a good thing on CW, but with the participation rate so low, I'd simply end it and try to come up with a fresh idea to replace it.

Quit posting and try Google.

That's a good idea!
I might make a thread asking for ideas, too!!

Mog's "What'cha'doin'" thread idea seems the better thought so far.

I figured it would be nice to see what everyone is up to during the week to see how bigger projects progress and evolve, or what piddly little things you mess with between.

Could be fun, or fodder for the newsletter.

That, I like. Seems to fit the bill with keeping the WW thing going.

Hmm.. Ok. I'll probably come up with a nice reusable post for it, or something. My main worry is that every Wednesday my post will say...
"Am starting a new project, not sure what it is yet!"

I think the Wednesday Worklog should be a thread each Wednesday where everyone posts their current progress on their current project.

Have a special condition where if you say that, 'Jay will mail you a crate of special, throat-seeking, angry badgers with rabies'

Usable information, and none of this 'I'd tell you more but its a seeeecret' crap. Post all or post nothing.

*EDIT* Ummm, CodersRule, that's been established

Jay, as far as the actual development side, what if we had some form of module writing, instead of short games? These modules could then be used for larger projects. People could request a tool / script for a game project of theirs be written, whether it be a standalone tool or something incorporating other existing tools, or something even more simple (even an ideas kit or something).

I agree with stealth in that people don't have much time to burn to work on Wednesday Workshops. Personally, I find it hard to make time for my own projects, and I think other people probably feel the same way. But having people make simple modules for their long-term projects could help the projects develop faster, and boost the developer's morale related to the project. The module would have to be a decent sort of task that can be delegated without too many dependencies. For larger, more important tools, the module's development could span several weeks (though it should be a generic tool that everyone could benefit from). Hmm, the language used could be an issue too...

What do you all think?

I think that the WW could still be popular. Just make the guidelines more specific and the coding is kept simple like "Text RPG" or "50 Lines of code only" I remember those were popular. or "A pong game with these graphics" and the (cheezy) graphics are supplied and everyone has to use them. That would be more doable and fun. Keep it specific. But like "A game with blood" or "A game with creatures" or "A touchscreen game" are not good topics for WW in my opinion.

It's sort of sad to see the WW go, but it's needed. It's been dead for far to long to be representative of this site any more. You could open up all of the old workshops though and allow members to post new entries to any previous workshop if they feel like it. Probably won't happen, but it's an idea.

As for a replacement for the WW, I think the work log idea sounds nice. It could be fun seeing what people are up to on a more frequent basis. Mindstorm's idea sounds like it would work worse in practice than in theory.

"Idigidragon" isn't saying anything. It's a sign posted on the workshop which says something to the effect of
"This site is closed until further notice. Sorry for any inconvenience."
or words to that effect.. can't quite remember..

Maybe we could have real-time game art workshop on Saturday.

Everyone could meet at the chat and start drawing things silly or not, that could be put in a game, and post them somewhere. 4-5 hours later, workshop would end, as people go to sleep.

Modifying and using other's work would be allowed, but authors would be credited where possible. After a few workshops, the results could be displayed at some page.

Music could also be made... and perhaps even small games, which could be modified/grown in the next workshop.

The "Realtime" thing has always been an issue for us. We're scattered throughout the world, half of us have oddball sleeping patterns, and it's just not going to work out well.

*he says, blindly ignoring the hint that the mudchat needs uploading functions*
