Socoder -> Blitz Max -> Wooshiness

Been trying to generate massive Wooshiness in BMax, whilst keeping up compatibilty, and trying not to use 30,000 sprites to do it!

What are some nice ways to do it?

If all else fails, I'll resort to using Noel's buffer thing from the other week, but I'm worried that previous BMax buffer attempts have been pretty messed up.

Nice blurry swirling "buffer" style overall screen effects, without having to resort to actual buffer stuff, because certain setups have bizarre issues..
eg, Horizontal Shooter looks pretty damn cool, except on about 50% of systems where it slows down to about 2fps.

Like I said, I've not yet had a play with Noel's stuff, but I'm just wondering if anyone had alternative suggestions before I do. Last time I tried doing Buffer things, it wasn't until the game was done and dusted that everyone suddenly came out of the woodwork to complain about the 2fps thing! So... Buffer = last resort, and will require many much testing!!

I had the idea of making blurred copies of all sprites. Then as they move (or as you turn up the 'wooshiness') you fade from the original sprite to the blurred one, and back.

You could try experimenting with this further, such as multiple blurred images at different blurs.

If you hit F12 on my recent games, you'll see a set of stats.
The games split your system's tested ability (during the AGameAWeek/Socoder logo) into 3 sections.
1st is regular sprites, 2nd is "Glow" and 3rd is Particles.

The Glow section is meant for the "images@blurs" thing, but there's only so much you can do with it. Glow is one this, Flames look great, and you can rotate/scale them about a bit to add variety.

But having control of a wee bit more would add so much to the end result. Being able to literally distort the screen, and break apart sprites in an instant. That'd be neat.

*sigh*

Shame that keeping compatibility usually gets in the way of neat effects.. Bloody PCs! Bring back Amiga!

The Amiga may make a comeback... www.natami.net/

And that's a NATive AMIga project, not just another PC with Amiga OS installed !

Joe, the Amiga will stay dead, The Living Dead mwahahahaha.....

Bear in mind though NatAmi is not a revival of the A500/A1200 etc, it's the successor of it's predecessor, backward compatible with past software, and can do anything and original Amiga can and more.

It would be cool to see it as a finished product rather than just a kit of parts though. It would be even cooler to see it in a case that looks similar to an original, but there may be a few Commodore lawsuits filed there. Amiga Corporation may own the copyright for the Amiga's architecture and may have gave the NatAmi project permission to hack away, but the case was based on the Commodore's C=128 so only time will tell if they let NatAmi take on the casing.

Ere !, I just had a thought...

Commodore did the manufacturing for Amiga Corp, I wonder if New Commodore would have the guts to redeem itself and rightfully earn that Commodore logo by doing the manufacture of a rightful product, rather than producing "Yet Another Gaming PC".
